Skyhawks Volleyball Drops a Pair to Open Season in Texas

CANYON, Texas – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team fell in a pair of games to open the season at the Britkare Lady Buff Classic on the campus of West Texas A&M University. The Skyhawks dropped a nail-bitter in five sets to the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith in the season opener and ended the day with a 3-0 loss to West Texas A&M.

Game One: Fort Smith 3, Fort Lewis 2
Fort Lewis hit .091 for the match compared to .158 for Fort Smith. Serving was a highlight for the Skyhawks in the match as the team earned 10 aces to five for the Lions. Fort Smith was stout at the net with an impressive 12 blocks, and the teams were equally as impressive in the backcourt with a total of 131 digs on the day.

Freshman Alexis Hobie kicked off her FLC career with a team-high 15 kills to go along with 11 digs. Sophomore Chay Swenson followed with 10 kills while freshman Natalia Lambos had seven. Junior Payton Harmann coordinated the offense with 27 assists and 13 digs. Junior Kamryn Lopez was a leader in the back row, coming up with 22 digs to lead all players.

"Our freshmen got their feet wet, and I think they held their composure really well," said head volleyball coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "Overall, we stayed aggressive while working through the kinks of a season-opener. We showed up and competed."

Set One (17-25)
The teams spent the early goings shaking the rust off as errors began adding up on both sides of the net. The Skyhawks saw an early lead at 4-3 courtesy of a service ace from Avynn La Rose, but Fort Smith roared back behind a 5-1 scoring run to take an 8-5 edge. The Lions continued to roll, going up 12-7 to force a Fort Lewis timeout. Fort Smith closed out the set on a 7-1 run to take the set by a score of 25-17.

Set Two (25-22)
The offense started clicking in set two with four players registering kills to give the Skyhawks an early 9-8 lead—forcing a Fort Smith timeout. The score was tied on four occasions through the middle of the set before a four-point burst allowed the Lions to tie the score at 17-17. The Skyhawks responded to the threat, picking up kills from Lambos and Nash to bring the FLC lead to 21-18. The Lions would tie things at 21's, but Fort Lewis held on to set two by a score of 25-22 behind a kill from La Rose.

Set Three (17-25)
The Skyhawks burst out to a 6-0 lead in the third set before a monster run gave the Lions a 9-6 advantage. Lambos put away a kill to pause the run, but Fort Smith responded to go up 14-8. The lead remained significant through the late points of the set, and a Fort Smith kill sealed the deal on a 25-17 win.

Set Four (25-17)
The score was tight early but kills from Hobie and Harmann highlighted an FLC run that saw the team ahead 11-5. The Skyhawks took advantage of errors by the Lions to take a commanding 19-10 lead. Much like the second set, the Lions strung points together to pull within striking distance but a kill from Swenson slowed the roll. FLC stayed tough as the set wore on, and an ace from freshman Korrina Pace sent the match to the deciding set.

Set Five (13-15)
Fans were treated to 11 tied scores in the final set of the match as neither team would allow for much distance. The Lions saw their first two-point lead at an unfortunate point in the set with the team going up 14-12, but a kill from Lambos kept hope alive. Fort Smith remained composed and ultimately found the final kill of the match for a 15-13 victory.

Game Two: West Texas A&M 3, Fort Lewis 0
The Skyhawks hit .141 for the match compared to a .419 clip for the Lady Buffs. WT was impressive from the service line as well, picking up 11 aces to FLC's two. Senior Madi Nash paced the team with seven kills on a .364 clip. Senior Cameron Callahan and Alexis Hobie followed with four kills apiece. Kamryn Lopez led the team with five digs.

Set One (25-14)
The Lady Buffs jumped out to an 8-2 lead to force an FLC timeout, and Hobie picked up a kill out of the break to give her team the ball. WT remained in control of the set, doubling up the lead at 20-10. A pair of late kills from Callahan kept the set from ending, but an eventual WT kill ending things in 25-14 fashion.

Set Two (17-25)
The Skyhawks found themselves in another deficit to start the second set, falling behind 6-1 to force an early timeout. FLC responded to the pressure to pull within a pair at 8-6 after a block by Nash and La Rose. The set remained competitive with the Skyhawks staying within a handful of points through the midway point. The Lady Buffs took advantage of a pair of errors to take the largest lead of the set at 18-12. The teams traded points down the stretch, but a late burst gave WT a 25-17 win.

Set Three (11-25)
WT went up by a score of 10-4 before a kill from Lauren Burns gave the Skyhawks a side-out point. The Lady Buffs built on the lead behind a handful of FLC miscues to lead 19-9. Swenson earned a kill out of a timeout to bring things to 19-10, but a 6-1 Lady Buff run closed out the match in 25-11 fashion.

"We are still a team that can battle, and I know that the desire to win is there. This type of competition is what we will see in the regular season," said Tarnauskaite. "What we can take forward from this is the fight to win and improve."
