Skyhawks End Up on Losing End of Fourth Quarter Surge, Fall to CSU Pueblo 65-61

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team found itself on the losing end of a fourth-quarter surge on Friday night, falling to CSU Pueblo by a final score of 65-61 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Skyhawks held a 23-12 advantage after the first quarter, but the Pack responded with a dominant fourth quarter, outscoring the home team 21-9 to seal the win.

Fort Lewis falls to 2-13 on the year and 1-8 in RMAC play while CSU Pueblo improves to 14-4 overall and 10-2 in the league.

Fort Lewis shot 35.3 percent (18-of-51) from the field and 22.7 percent (5-of-22) from three compared to 42.1 percent (24-of-57) and 22.2 percent (6-of-27) for CSU Pueblo. The Skyhawks held an advantage from the charity stripe, draining 20 free throws compared to 11 for the Pack. The game was a physical battle from the jump, leading to 43 total turnovers and 38 total fouls.

Redshirt senior Sydney Candelaria, the league's leading scorer (20.5 ppg), continued to pad her head with 27 points to lead all players. Redshirt junior Alyssa Adams followed with 10 points and four assists. Redshirt junior Brooke McGee had a career-high 10 rebounds to all players.

The teams swapped the lead to start the game with a three from Adams seeing Fort Lewis up 7-5 with 5:32 on the clock. The Pack leveled the score at 7-7 moments later, but a 12-point scoring run pulled the Skyhawks ahead 19-7 with just over a minute remaining. The offensive prowess continued with Fort Lewis carrying a 23-12 advantage into the second quarter.

Candelaria carried over the momentum into the second, dropping in a deep three to extend the score to 26-12 two minutes into the quarter. The Pack cut the lead to 11 points over the ensuing minutes before a McGee layup slowed the roll. The lead dwindled as time wound down, but an authoritative three by Candelaria sent the teams into the break with Fort Lewis ahead 38-29.

CSU Pueblo came out of the break with renewed energy, going on a run to cut the lead to just two points with eight minutes on the clock. McGee nailed a three to get the Skyhawks on the scoring side of things, and Candelaria followed with a trio of points to see the score at 44-36. Fort Lewis did its best to make up for the slow start by going up 50-40 after a layup from redshirt sophomore Ember Cervantes. Adams hit a pair of free throws to close out the quarter with Fort Lewis ahead 52-44.

The tides began to turn in the fourth quarter with the Pack draining back-to-back threes, followed by a jumper to knot things up at 52-52 with 6:28 to go. From there, CSU Pueblo took the lead and built it up to five points with under four minutes to play. McGee and Candelaria teamed up for four points to narrow the deficit to just two points with just over one minute to play. The Pack defense held strong over the final moments of play, keeping the Skyhawks off the board en route to a 65-61 win.

Fort Lewis (2-13, 1-8 RMAC) is back inside of Whalen Gymnasium tomorrow for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off versus Adams State University (7-9, 5-6 RMAC). The teams split the series last season with the Skyhawks claiming the most recent meeting on Feb. 19 by a final score of 88-85.
