Skyhawks women's soccer closes out regular season at home, hosts a trio of RMAC opponents

10/13/2022 12:00:00 PM

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team will close out the regular-season at home with a trio of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matches set to kick off on Friday. The team has been tough to contain on Dirks Field and boasts a 4-1-1 home record this fall.

First, the team will face Black Hills State at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by a Sunday slate against MSU Denver. Sunday will be the team's senior day celebration where the four graduating seniors, Madyson Barela, Katie Dunbabin, Meredith Satre, and McKenna Thompson, will be honored prior to kickoff. The regular season wraps up on Wednesday with a match versus Western Colorado set to take place under the lights.

Last Time Out
Though the team went winless on the road last week, the final scores don't tell the whole story. Fort Lewis faced off against the league's top teams, No. 10 Mines and Regis University, and narrowly fell in both matches. In the Mines contest, the Orediggers outshot the Skyhawks 18-8 for the match, including a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Sabrina Reyes netted her second goal of the season while sophomores Julia Johnson and McKenna Ford shipped in shots for the match. Senior Madyson Barela came off the bench and led the team with two shots. Sophomore Katlyn Rosenbaum played all 90 minutes between the pipes and had six saves along the way.

In the Regis match, it was a go-ahead strike in the 70th minute that ended up being the difference in a 1-0 final. Regis held a 25-12 shots advantage for the match, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore Riley Bravin was a key force between the pipes and earned a career-high 10 saves in 90 minutes of play. Sophomore McKenna Ford led the team with three shots, one on goal, in 90 minutes. The defensive trio of Elizabeth David, Rachel Peebles, and Cecilia
Marlowe played the entirety of the match and held the Rangers below their RMAC goals per game average of 2.4.

Scouting Black Hills State University
BHSU sits at 1-10-2 overall and 1-8 in league play to rank 12th in the conference standings. The Yellow Jackets opened up RMAC play with a 1-0 shutout of Colorado Christian and have since been outscored 26-0 in a seven-match skid.

The Yellow Jackets are averaging .23 goals per game while allowing 2.38 from the opposition. Three players have one goal this season while Emma Avery leads the team with one goal and one assist. Makayla Dannely has started 11 games at goal with a 1.71 goals-against average. She has faced 147 shots with 61 saves and a .772 save percentage.

Fort Lewis is 4-0-1 all-time against BHSU, including a 2-0 shutout last season. Danielle Gonzales scored both goals for the Skyhawks in the victory while Rosenbaum and Dunbabin combined for five saves at goal.

Scouting MSU Denver
MSU Denver is 9-2-4 overall and 5-1-3 in the conference, ranking fifth overall while riding a four-match win streak. The Roadrunners have held the opposition scoreless through the last four matches while racking up 12 goals.

The team averages 1.67 goals per game compared to a .60 goals per game average for their opponents. Jaimy Sawaged is leading the way with six goals and two assists, followed by Paloma Teran at four goals and two assists.
From there, MSU Denver has nine players with at least one goal in the books. Much like the Skyhawks, the Roadrunners have been splitting time at goalkeeper, using the duo of Kylie Bach and Kayla Caballero to tally nine shutouts. Bach holds a .83 goals-against average with 18 saves while Caballero maintains a .39 goals-against average with 19 saves.

Fort Lewis is 4-7-1 all-time versus MSU Denver and dropped last season's meeting by a 1-0 final. The Skyhawks have fallen in five-straight matches against the Roadrunners, each of which has ended in a 1-0 final. Rosenbaum got the start in goal last season and played a stellar 90 minutes with seven saves.

Scouting Western Colorado University
Western Colorado is 5-9-1 on the year and 3-6 in league play to rank just ahead of Fort Lewis in the standings. The Mountaineers have lost four-straight matches, each of which have been shutouts from the opposition.

The Mountaineers are averaging .87 goals per game compared to 1.87 goals per game from their opponents. Taylor Bottoms and Laura Pelino each have two goals to lead the team. Reece Mercer has picked up four assists this season, in addition to one goal, to lead the team with six points. Aubree Orosco is the team's primary keeper having started 11 games thus far. She has faced 162 shots and holds a 1.62 goals-against average with 58 saves.

Fort Lewis is 8-2-2 all-time against Western Colorado and claimed a 1-0 victory in last year's regular-season finale. The win was the catalyst that the Skyhawks need to make the RMAC Tournament as the No. 8-seed, and that storyline has the potential of playing out again this season.

Freshmen Filling Key Roles
It was no secret at the start of the season that the Skyhawks would rely heavily on the play of newcomers, but what could not be predicted was how the fresh faces would perform. To say that the young Skyhawks have impressed would be an understatement. Dannon Yake ranks third on the team with 1070 minutes played on defense and is joined by Rachel Peebles at 1015 total minutes. Additionally, Anna Tucker and Rozlin Gomez have each played in all 15 matches this season. The roster boasts 13 freshmen and two transfer players which gives fans much to look forward to in years to come.

Around the RMAC
Regis maintains its positioning as the league leader after a 2-0 weekend. The Rangers are just ahead of No. 10 Colorado School of Mines, and the teams will face off in a match that will likely decide the regular-season champion on October 26 to close out the regular season.

Mesa's Lila Dere continues to lead the way with 17 goals on the year, followed by Mines' Reese McDermott at nine. Westminster's Alexa Maple had 10 assists this season to pace the conference. MSU Denver's Kayla Caballero holds a .387 goals-against average to lead the conference.

RMAC Tournament Ahead
If the Skyhawks make the postseason tournament, the quarterfinal round begins on Sunday, October 30th at 2:00 p.m. at the high seed. From there, the semifinals will occur on the following Wednesday with the championship set for Saturday, November 5.
