Women's soccer shuts out Yellow Jackets for 2-0 home win

DURANGO, Colo. – A penalty-kick strike from Sabrina Reyes, followed by the brace from Madyson Barela, lifted the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team to an important 2-0 win over Black Hills State University on Friday. Fort Lewis improves to 5-10-1 overall and 4-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and needs just one more win to secure a spot in the conference tournament.

Fort Lewis dominated BHSU (1-11-2, 1-9-0 RMAC) offensively with 20 shots to just four from the visiting squad. The Skyhawks sent 12 shots on goal compared to two for the Yellow Jackets. Fort Lewis had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks and the teams were nearly even in the fouls category, combining for 19 on the night.

Freshman Anna Tucker led the team with four shots, followed by senior Madyson Barela who picked up three (two on goal). Sophomore Elizabeth David and freshman Cecelia Marlowe each clocked 90 minutes of action to anchor the defense while freshman Rachel Peebles played 73 quality minutes on the pitch. Sophomores Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for a two-save shutout at goal.

The Skyhawks were pressured by the Yellow Jackets early in the match and were forced into a pair of back passes Rosenbaum through the opening five minutes of play. After roughly 10 minutes of play, Fort Lewis was able to settle and connect on passes to maintain possession of the ball in the attacking half of the field. David sent the first shot on target in the 14th minute on a free kick chance near midfield, but the BHSU keeper charged the towering shot to earn her first save of the night.

Anna Tucker got in on the attacking action five minutes later when the freshman collected a long pass up the middle from Peebles. Tucker timed her run perfectly, but the keeper pushed it away with her fingertips to hold the match scoreless. The goose eggs didn't last much longer, though, as the eventual game-winner found the back of the net in the 24th minute. The opportunity came when Reyes drew a foul after beating the keeper for a wide-open chance. The sophomore took advantage of a penalty kick and placed her fourth goal of the season on the right side for a 1-0 lead.

Aubrey Swindle and Barela each saw chances in the weening minutes of the half, but the one-goal lead held strong as time expired. Fort Lewis dominated offensively in the half, putting up 11 shots (six on goal) compared to just one for the Yellow Jackets. Both sides had five fouls through 45 minutes of play.

Unlike the first half of play, Fort Lewis was locked in from the first whistle of the second half. The focus paid dividends when the team's first shot of the half, coming in the 48th minute, found the back of the net to add a brace to the lead. The goal off the foot of Barela caught the defense on their heels, and it was for good reason. Swindle made an athletic move toward the left side of the field, drawing the attention of two defenders before poking the ball ahead to Pashcke. Paschke sent a 10-yard pass to the feet of Barela at the top of the box, and without wasting a step, the senior riffled a left-footed shot top left for her third goal of the season.

BHSU found its first shot on goal of the match in the 50th minute, but a save by Bravin maintained the two-goal advantage for the Skyhawks. Following the shot from the opposition, Fort Lewis went on to send a trio of shots on target over the next five minutes of play. First, it was the ever-dangerous Swindle who placed a diving shot on target and into the lap of the crouching keeper. Swindle had another shot saved moments later, followed by a Paschke header from 20-yards out to bring the opposing keeper's save total to 10.

The closing minutes of the match saw shots from freshman Tristan Hanrath and Rozlin Gomez, in addition to a strike by senior McKenna Thompson, but the 2-0 score held as the home contest came to a close.
