Skyhawks sendoff seniors with Shutout over South Dakota Mines

DURANGO, Colo. – Even through rain, snow, and sunshine, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team was determined to send off its seniors in style, shutting out the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers by a score of 2-0 in the final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Contest of the season Sunday afternoon.

The Skyhawks close out the season with a 4-11-2 overall record and a 3-7 mark in RMAC games. Today's win ends South Dakota Mine's season at 1-14-3 overall and 0-9-1 in its RMAC schedule.

Fort Lewis said a heartfelt goodbye to its three graduating seniors who played in their final game for the blue and gold this afternoon: Ciaran Feeney, Daniel Coronado Morales, and Andres Hernandez.

"It's good to finish off the season with a win at home and send off the seniors on a positive note," Fort Lewis College Head Coach David Oberholtzer said. "I really just want to express my thanks to Danny, Ciaran, and Andres for everything that they have done for the program. I'm happy for them, and I just hope they had a great experience. Now we look forward to next fall and start getting ready for the spring to progress forward."

Fort Lewis dominated the Hardrockers offensively, sending 25 shots overall to South Dakota Mines' nine. The Skyhawks launched nine shots on goal to the Hardrockers two.

Loic Jean-Baptiste put the Skyhawks on the board early, splitting the Hardrockers defense up the middle and chipping over the keeper for the score in the 26th minute. Gabriel Legendre earned the assist on a beautiful pass into the open space for Jean-Baptiste.

Fort Lewis took 15 of its 25 overall shots in the opening half, but South Dakota Mines was able to limit the Skyhawks to just the lone goal.

Right out of the gate in the second half, FLC was back on the offensive and forcing the Hardrockers to defend in its back third of the field.

In the 63rd minute, the Skyhawks got a solid look on goal, and Aymaro Vargas took advantage of the insurance goal. A pass from Joseph Butzke from down the left side gave Vargas a clear look from the middle of the penalty box. South Dakota Mines keeper Kole Villescas was able to get a hand to the ball, but the powerful strike from Vargas continued into the net for the goal.

Overall SDM held the advantage in corner kicks 10-8, and Fort Lewis provided additional opportunities for the Hardrockers as they led in fouls 11-8.

Brenden Oberg made his fourth career start in goal this afternoon, earning both his first win and shutout as the Skyhawks goalkeeper. Oberg finished with just two saves across all ninety minutes. South Dakota Mines' Villescas tallied seven saves on the afternoon.
