10/4/2022 4:40:00 PM

AMARILLO, Texas. – Day one struggles dug a whole that could not be climbed out of as the Fort Lewis College men's golf team finished in 14th at the Ryan Palmer Invitational hosted by West Texas A&M University at the Amarillo Golf Club. Ryan Palmer, an Amarillo native and current PGA Professional, created his foundation in 2003 which creates life-change and brighter futures for communities and underserved families by offering access to education, self-care, and personal development.

"We were a totally different team between the first and third rounds," head coach Jim Foltz said. "We are still trying to figure a few things out, and one of those is why the first round is always killing us. However, I am very proud of our guys for not giving up and fighting back, especially Carson Kerr who scored the lowest round of his college career. Going from +23 on the first round to minus -1 in the final shows just how hard these guys fought back. All we can do is compete at our best and let the chips fall where they may."

Fort Lewis college was one of six Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference programs to compete in the tournament, providing a glimpse of both conference and regional competition.

Oklahoma Christian took home the first-place team title with a final score of 823, 17 strokes below par. The Eagles also captured a tie for the first-place individual title as well. Oskari Nikku and Exequiel Rodriguez each shot a 204 (-6) in route for the win.

While the Skyhawks were able to shave off nearly ten or more strokes each round, their event opening 303 (+23) was simply too much for them to overcome. Across the tournament FLC landed one eagle, 35 birdies, 64 bogeys, ten double bogeys and four triple bogeys.

Round One (303, +23)
The opening round posed the toughest challenge for the Skyhawks. Bogeys racked up quicker than they could count, totaling 24 on the morning alongside six double bogeys and a single triple bogey. With only seven total birdies on the round, Fort Lewis quickly found themselves in a hole. Kellen Kudrna tallied the lowest scorecard for FLC, scoring a 74 (+4) and finishing in a tie for fifty-first.

Round Two (290, +10)
The Skyhawks took flight towards a better round two, but still found themselves over par after another tough round. Kerr kept Fort Lewis in the race, scoring a 71 (+1) to finish in a tie for fifty-first. As a unit the Skyhawks improved to 12 birdies and even an eagle on the afternoon, but 21 bogeys, four double bogeys and a pair of triple bogies still kept them well above par.

Round Three (279, -1)
Kerr really found his stride in the final round, scoring a 68 (-2) that included a pair of bogeys and four birdies, two of which came on holes 16 and 18 to secure a tie for thirty first in the final round. Fort Lewis as a unit brought down their final round bogeys to 19 with one triple bogey while increasing their birdies to 16.
