Skyhawks prepared to host annual Tom Standt Memorial race, welcomes all-ages to Hillcrest Golf Course

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's and women's cross country teams are back in action this Friday, hosting the annual Tom Strandt Memorial/4-Corners Cross Country Classic at Hillcrest Golf Course—the eventual site of the 2022 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.

The Skyhawks, combined with the efforts from Bayfield High School and Durango High School, will be welcoming middle school, high school, and college-age teams to Hillcrest on Friday afternoon. Racing kicks off a 2:00 p.m. with the middle school girl's 3k, followed by the Tom Strandt Memorial Men's 8k at 2:30 p.m.

A pair of high school races are scheduled to follow before the women's collegiate 6k begins at 4:30 p.m. The afternoon turns into the evening with the finale, an open/community 5k, sending the event into the awards ceremony at 6:00 p.m.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis toed the line on September 17 at the MSU Denver Roadrunner Invite, competing against a stacked field of regional opponents. The women's team finished fourth in the field of 11 squads racing in the 6k—compiling 143 points on the day. The team finished ahead of No. 4 UCCS (143) who was ranked second South-Central Region at the time. The Skyhawks also finished ahead of MSU Denver and Westminster College who rank ninth and tenth in the region, respectively. The Skyhawks ran for an average of 23:40.36 with a spread of 2:09.50.

The men's team totaled 195 points which placed them eighth overall in the 10-team 8k field. The Skyhawks finished ahead of Texas A&M International and Westminster College. The field included No. 2 Colorado School of Mines, No. 7 Colorado Christian, and No. 30 CSU Pueblo. Fort Lewis ran for an average of 26:07.70 with a 1:10.20 spread.

South Central Regional Rankings
Notoriously the toughest region in all of NCAA Division II, the South-Central Region boasts a flurry of RMAC squads in the top 10 ranks. For the first time since 2018, the Fort Lewis College women's cross country team was ranked in the South Central Region, coming in 10th in the week two version of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll. Adams State leads the way at No. 1, followed by Colorado School of Mines and UCCS. The men's side is also teeming with squads from the RMAC roster, led by Adams State. Mines, Colorado Christian, Western Colorado, and UCCS follow to round out the top five in the region.
