Candelaria Sets New Career High in Narrow Road Loss to Rangers

DENVER, Colo. – Redshirt senior guard Sydney Candelaria put up a career-high 36 points, good for fourth-most in a single game in Fort Lewis College women's basketball history, but it wouldn't be enough as a late Regis University three-pointer sealed a 78-77 road loss for the Skyhawks.

Fort Lewis falls to 2-20 overall and 1-15 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Regis improves to 11-14 on the year and 7-11 in the league.

Fort Lewis shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the field and 45.8 percent (11-of-24) from three compared to 58.3 percent (28-of-48) from the field and 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from three for Regis. The three-point percentage for the Skyhawks marked the second-best outing this season, while the field goal percentage ranked third on the year.

Candelaria was 13-of-26 from the field and 5-of-9 from beyond the arc en route to her 36-point outing. Redshirt junior Alyssa Adams followed with 14 points and four rebounds, followed by 10 points and four rebounds for redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson.

"I thought our team got off to a great start with amazing energy. We were really excited to play in front of so many former players, and our energy reflected that," said head coach Taylor Harris. "Sydney played with a spark tonight and that was really fun to be part of. Her team gave her a lot of confidence, and she played like someone who knows that all of her teammates are behind her."

The Skyhawks got off to a blistering start, going up 16-11 through five minutes after a Candelaria three-pointer. The Rangers knocked down a three two minutes later to pull within three, but Candelaria answered back in her usual style, floating a jumper for a 23-18 score. Hot-shooting continued down the stretch with Regis cutting the Skyhawks lead to just one point, but a jumper from Iva Drobnjak saw Fort Lewis ahead 28-25 after one quarter.

Fort Lewis shot 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the field and 80 percent (4-of-5) from three in the opener. Regis was equally as impressive, shooting 66.7 (8-of-12) from the field while hitting five three-pointers.

The Rangers opened the second quarter on a 7-0 scoring run to claim a 32-28 lead with just under six minutes on the clock. Adams and redshirt freshman Jana Conejero combined for six points to cut the deficit to just one point as the teams headed into a media timeout. It was all Candelaria out of the break as the senior dropped in two free throws and a deep three to see Fort Lewis ahead 39-35 with three minutes to go. A late free throw from Conjero kept the spread at four points with the Skyhawks up 42-38 heading into the break.

Fort Lewis came out of the break on a tear, seeing the largest lead of the night at 49-38 before a 12-point run carried the Rangers ahead 50-49 with 4:12 on the clock. Redshirt junior Brooke McGee his a three to halt the run and give Fort Lewis back the lead. The teams traded the lead from there, but a jumper from Candelaria had the Skyhawks ahead 59-57 after three-quarters of play.

Conjero and Candelaria each hit threes to begin the fourth quarter, giving the Skyhawks a brief lead before a Ranger jumper knotted things at 65-65. Regis built another lead, this time at six points, but Candelaria answered yet again to see the Skyhawks down 75-71 with 3:35 remaining. Candelaria continued to give defenders fits, scoring on back-to-back possessions to tie the score at 75's.

The Rangers responded with a clutch three-pointer with 1:43 on the clock, putting the home team ahead 78-75. Adams answered back with a mid-range jumper to find the Skyhawks down by one point with a minute to play. Fort Lewis performed mightily on the defensive side of things, forcing a turnover to see one final possession, but the three-point attempt was just off for a 78-77 final score.

"It's tough dropping the first two games of a road trip, both games experienced difference emotions," noted Harris. "We have to keep going, believing, and enjoying these moments we are together."

Fort Lewis (2-20, 1-15 RMAC) will play a Monday conference game versus Colorado Christian University (6-16, 3-13 RMAC) in Lakewood, Colorado. Tipoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. The Skyhawks bested the Cougars in the first matchup this season, running away with an exhilarating 67-66 home win.
