DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team made the return to Whalen Gymnasium on Thursday night but ultimately fell to Westminster College by a final score of 68-40 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

Fort Lewis drops to 2-24 on the year at 1-19 in the RMAC while Westminster improves to 16-8 overall and 15-5 in the league.

The Skyhawks struggled from beyond the arc, connecting on just three shots versus seven for the Griffins. Leading the way offensively for the Skyhawks was redshirt senior Sydney Candelaria with 24 points (9-of-10 FT) to go along with five rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson followed with six points while leading the team with seven rebounds.

Fort Lewis jumped ahead early in the opening quarter, going up 4-0 behind Candelaria and Sorenson buckets, but a three for the Griffins narrowed the lead. The Skyhawks doubled up the lead on two occasions midway through the quarter, seeing a 16-8 lead with 1:55 to go before a late bucket for the visitors had things at 16-12 at the conclusion of quarter one.

The Griffins responded mightily in the second quarter with an 11-0 run bringing them ahead 23-18. Candelaria tacked on four points to slow down the roll, but the momentum carried into the following minutes with Westminster going ahead 37-22 at the buzzer.

The offensive prowess rolled over into the second half of play with the lead extending to 20 points before a layup from Candelaria had the score at 42-24 with 7:05 on the clock. The teams went blow for blow over the following minutes with a three from redshirt junior Alyssa Adams bringing it to 53-31 with 1:40 remaining. Westminster picked up five more points down the stretch to hold a 58-31 heading into the final quarter of play.

The visitors hit a three to open the fourth quarter, bringing the lead to 30 points before a scoreless four minutes plagued both sides. Candelaria found success on a jumper with 5:37 to go, but the Griffins echoed the bucket to build the lead back up. Two good free throws and a three-pointer at the buzzer highlighted the Skyhawks' scoring effort down the stretch with the Griffins claiming a 68-40 road win.
