Late Push Not Enough in 54-51 Home Loss For Skyhawks Women's Basketball

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team's comeback effort fell just short in a 54-51 home loss to New Mexico Highlands University on Friday night. Fort Lewis drops to 2-17 overall and 1-12 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while NMHU improves to 5-15 overall and 1-12 in the league.

Fort Lewis shot 21.1 percent (15-of-71) from the field compared to 32.7 percent (16-of-49) for NMHU. The Skyhawks struggled from three, shooting just 11.4 percent (4-of-35) for the game.

Redshirt senior guard Sydney Candelaria put up 18 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson followed with 15 points and 17 rebounds. Redshirt junior Alyssa Adams rounded out double-digit scorers with 10 points.

The Skyhawks faced a 32-19 deficit at halftime, but the home team began to mount an attempted comeback out of the gates. The Cowgirls managed to build up an 18-point lead midway through the third quarter, but Candelaria and redshirt freshman Jana Conejero combined to pull the Skyhawks within 13 points. Sorenson dropped in a layup to round out scoring in the third quarter, seeing Fort Lewis down 43-33.

Adams nailed a three to kick off the fourth quarter, pushing the score to 43-36. Sorenson contributed three points over the ensuing minutes, bringing things to 44-39 before the Cowgirls could build the lead back up to nine points. The Skyhawks pushed for six-straight points and knocked down another three to pull within one at 49-48 with :11 to go. NMHU responded with a trio of free throws to grow the lead back to four points as time began to dwindle. Candelaria responded with a huge three with :03 on the clock, pulling her team within a point, but the Cowgirls put a nail in the coffin with two free throws for a 54-51 final score.

Fort Lewis (2-17, 1-12 RMAC) is back inside of Whalen Gymnasium tomorrow evening for a 5:00 p.m. tilt versus the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (8-12, 6-8 RMAC). It will be the first meeting between the teams this season. Fort Lewis outrebounded NMHU 54-40 for the contest.
