Skyhawks Drop 55-52 Contest to Mountain Lions

DURANGO, Colo. – A high-scoring third quarter was the difference-maker for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team in a narrow 55-52 loss to University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Saturday night. The Skyhawks carried a 26-20 lead at the half, but a 22-point third-quarter burst for the Mountain Lions kicked off an eventual comeback effort in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup.

Fort Lewis drops to 2-18 overall and 1-13 in RMAC play while UCCS improves to 9-12 on the year and 7-8 in league play after sweeping the weekend road trip.

Fort Lewis shot 34.8 percent (16-of-46) from the field compared to 43.5 percent (20-of-46) for the Mountain Lions. Both sides struggled from three, combining for just eight makes on the night. Fort Lewis held a slight 33-32 advantage in rebounds, including 11 offensive boards for the team's second double-digit offensive rebound outing in a row.

Redshirt senior Sydney Candelaria had a dominant performance, collecting 30 points while shooting 50 percent (8-of-16) from the field. Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson chipped in 17 points to go along with five rebounds. Redshirt junior Brooke McGee led the team with six rebounds. Redshirt junior Alyssa Adams had a well-rounded game with five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

It looked to be all Skyhawks in the opening half, with back-to-back threes and a layup from Candelaria moving the score to 19-10 with seven minutes to go in the second quarter. The Mountain Lions wouldn't let the lead get to double-figures and clawed their way to within six points heading into the break.

The slow offensive start was made up for in the third quarter as both sides came out firing on all cylinders. The Mountain Lions pulled within a pair midway through the quarter, ut a Sorenson layup doubled the lead at 36-32. It didn't take long for UCCS to come knocking again, this time tying things up at 38-38 behind a deep three-pointer with 1:43 to go. Candelaria echoed the shot moments later, seeing the Skyhawks up one, but a late free throw sent the teams into the final quarter knotted at 42-42.

The Mountain Lions carried the renewed energy into the fourth, taking a 47-42 lead with nine minutes to play. Fort Lewis wouldn't go away quietly and pulled back within one point with two made free throws from Candelaria—bringing things to 53-52 with :16 on the clock. The Skyhawks forced a set of free throws with :08 remaining, and the UCCS player hit both to pad the lead at 55-52. The Skyhawks would see one more opportunity to send things to overtime, but the deep three rattled off the rim to end the comeback effort.

Up next, Fort Lewis (2-18, 1-13 RMAC) will kick off a four-game road stand on Friday, February 11 with a battle versus Colorado School of Mines (18-3, 13-2 RMAC).
