Skyhawks Dominate Game Two, Earn Series Split Versus The Pack

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College softball team closed out the series with CSU Pueblo on Saturday, earning a split to improve to 5-20 overall and 5-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Freshman pitcher Amiee Shanks earned the win in the circle, improving to 4-4 on the year.

Game One: CSU Pueblo 5, Fort Lewis 2
Starting pitcher Cat Rodman was efficient to start game one, working around a leadoff walk to lead a runner stranded. The Skyhawks' offense had a similarly efficient first inning, getting a leadoff single from Alex Tenorio. Madyson Devers followed with a walk, but both were stranded as strong defense picked up a trio of outs.

The score held at zeros heading into the third inning, but it would be the Pack who struck first. The visiting squad picked up the first run of the day courtesy of a sacrifice fly to Hannah Rutherford in centerfield and doubled the lead at 2-0 with a single up the middle. Rodman pitched into a pair of pop-ups to end the frame with the Skyhawks down two. Fort Lewis broke through in the fourth inning when a double from Cara Daugherty plated Rodman from second. The Skyhawks found the equalizer in the following at-bat with an RBI single from Taylor Beaman to tie it up.

The 2-2 score held true through the ensuing innings with the game deadlocked heading into the seventh. Unfortunately, the inning proved to be the favorable one for the CSU Pueblo offense. The Pack started the frame with back-to-back singles, putting a pair aboard for the big-bopper Hannah Hackney. Hackney was primed for the spotlight and launched her second home run of the series over the fence in left-center for a 5-2 lead. The Skyhawks were unable to muster a comeback in the bottom of the inning, falling by a final score of 5-2.

Game Two: Fort Lewis 7, CSU Pueblo 1
It was the Fort Lewis offense that broke through first in the final game of the series, working a leadoff single from Tenorio. The freshman showed off her savvy on the basepaths, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jadyn Gilley. Moving up 60 extra feet proved vital as a sac fly from Rodman scored Tenorio from third for a 1-0 lead. CSU Pueblo found the tying run in the third inning with an RBI single down the right-field line, but starting pitcher Amiee Shanks induced a groundout to minimize the damage.

The Skyhawks went to work in the bottom of the third, getting a pair on with a single and walk. The Pack looked to have gotten out of a jam with a smooth double play, but back-to-back doubles from Daugherty and Sydney Stewart plated a pair of a 3-1 advantage. The runs continued to pour on from there, first in the fourth inning when a triple from Gilley scored two runs. Rodman followed with an RBI groundout to bring the lead to 6-1.

Fort Lewis could feel the win within its grasp, and the confidence showed on the defensive end of things with a huge 1-6-3 double play eliminating a scoring opportunity to get out of the fifth inning. Gilley added on to her impressive stat line in the sixth inning, ripping an RBI sac fly to right field to score Tenorio to the game's final run. The Pack looked to have something brewing in the top of the seventh with a pair of two-out singles slapped up the middle. Tenorio and Stewart had something to say about that, though, putting together an edge-of-your-seat groundout, capped off by an impressive pick from Stewart at first base to end the game.
