Skyhawks Fall in Pair to Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Skyhawks softball team fell in the opening doubleheader of its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series with Colorado School of Mines on Saturday. Fort Lewis falls to 5-22 over and 5-13 in league play while Mines improves to 9-17, 9-7 RMAC.

Game One: Mines 9, Fort Lewis 7
Fort Lewis had a shaky start to the afternoon, trailing 3-0 after an inning of work. The offense went to work from there, knotting the game at 3-3 in the third inning. The Skyhawks picked up the runs on an outfield error and a two-run single down the left-field line from Cara Daugherty. Sensing the impending threat, the Orediggers clobbered a grand slam to dead center in the bottom of the frame, going up 7-3.

Mines tacked on another two runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a throwing miscue and sacrifice fly to right field to go ahead 9-3. Cat Rodman got the Skyhawks back in the scoring column in the top of the sixth, sending a leadoff homer over the left-field wall for a 9-4 score. Taya Opheim earned an RBI single, knocking one to the third baseman and beating out the throw to score Daugherty. Alex Tenorio kept things going with an RBI single through the left side to score Sydney Stewart , making it 9-6 and bring on a pitching change.

Down but never out, the Skyhawks picked up another run in the top of the seventh on a Rodman groundout, bringing the score to 9-7 with two outs. The rally continued as Daugherty reached on a hit by pitch, putting a runner aboard with the tying run at the plate. Hannah Rutherford kept it going, winning a tough at-bat with a walk to put two on for Stewart. After a meeting in the circle, the Orediggers executed a routine groundout to close out game one.

Game Two: Mines 7, Fort Lewis 0
The second game of the series got off to a different start than the first with both sides rallying around the defense to hold it scoreless after two innings. Mines had enough of the waiting around, though, picking up a three-RBI triple to break the game open. The Orediggers followed that up with another triple to plate the fourth run of the day, followed by a wild pitch score to make it 5-0.

The fourth inning came and went without much fanfare before the Skyhawks picked up their first hit of the game in the fifth via a Daugherty single. Mines added hits and much more in the bottom of the frame, scoring two on an outfield single. Fort Lewis couldn't do much else, ending the game with just one hit for a 7-0 score.
