Extra Base Hits Carry Skyhawks to Sunday Split

GOLDEN, Colo. – After dropping the first game of the day, the Fort Lewis College softball team rallied to run-rule Colorado School of Mines, 11-2, to end the weekend with a win. Fort Lewis moves to 6-23 over and 6-14 in league play while Mines shifts to 10-18, 10-8 RMAC.

Game One: Mines 12, Fort Lewis 1
The offensive prowess that the Orediggers displayed yesterday carried right over into game three as the home squad quickly got up 4-0 in the first inning. The Skyhawks got one back in the second inning, scoring Cara Daugherty from second base on an RBI double. The score held at 4-1 before a two-run third inning had Mines up 6-1.

Extra base hits highlighted the fourth inning, with five doubles doubling up the lead at 12-1 in favor of the Orediggers. Facing run-rule threat, the Skyhawks picked up back-to-back walks from Faith Sgro and Jadyn Gilley, but a strikeout on the outside corner closed things out in five innings.

Game Two: Mines 7, Fort Lewis 0
The Fort Lewis bats came alive in game two with the group stringing together five hits in the third inning to go up 5-0. The scoring surge was kickstarted by an RBI single from Cat Rodman to score Sloan Shotton from third. Katie Pippel followed it up with a double to score a pair, making it 3-0. Daugherty and Jadyn Gilley followed with a triple and double, respectively, to make it a 5-0 Skyhawks lead. Mines got one back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single up the middle.

Opportunities continued to find the Skyhawks with a pair of two-out walks and an Oredigger error loading them up in the fourth. The patience at the plate paid off in the following at-bat as Sydney Stewart drew a bases-loaded walk to give Fort Lewis a 6-1 lead. Daugherty followed with a hit by pitch to extend the lead to 7-1. Gilley took the opportunity to slice her second double of the game down the left-field line to score two for a 9-1 ballgame. The Orediggers ended the inning with a strikeout, facing an eight-run deficit heading into the bottom of the fourth.

The Orediggers dug deep, plating a run to keep the game going with the score at 9-2. Fort Lewis defense limited the damage, but the team would need to pick up an extra run to end things early. Shotton was up for the task, belting her first long ball of the year over the right-field fence to see the score at 10-2. The team added another on a single to left field off the bat of Stewart, making it 11-2 with three outs to work with. Defense continued to work behind starting pitcher Amiee Shanks, picking up three-straight groundouts to close the door.
