Skyhawks Pick Up First Sweep of the Season Behind Well-Rounded Performances

DURANGO, Colo. – All areas of the game were clicking this afternoon as the Fort Lewis College softball team routed the University of Colorado Colorado Springs for their first sweep of the season. Fort Lewis improves to 8-23 overall and 8-14 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with the wins.

Game One: Fort Lewis 3, UCCS 1
The Skyhawks got out of trouble in the first inning, eliminating a leadoff single with a poised strikeout from freshman Amiee Shanks for a scoreless ballgame. UCCS mimicked the defensive prowess in the bottom half of the first, working around a one-out single from redshirt sophomore Katie Pippel to hold it at zeros. The second inning passed without much fanfare, but the third inning was a different story. The Mountain Lions earned a leadoff single, followed by a one-out double to see a pair in scoring position. The visitors loaded them up with a walk, but Shanks recorded back-to-back web gems to keep UCCS off the board.

Fort Lewis broke the game open in the fifth, manufacturing a two-out run off the bat of Pippel for her second hit of the game. The sophomore sent a sharp liner down the left-field line to score junior Taya Opheim from second for a 1-0 score. The Mountain Lions found an answer in the top of the sixth, picking up a single to put the tying run aboard. That runner would eventually come around to score on a bobbled pop fly up the middle to knot it up 1-1. Shanks would allow a single and a walk, but the freshman picked up the final out of the inning with a groundout to the circle to hold the game at one apiece.

Sophomore Cara Daugherty got the sixth inning started with a line-drive single to left field, and pinch hitter sophomore Kamie Matsukawa followed with a walk to put two runners on base. The UCCS pitcher responded with a strikeout of redshirt senior Taylor Beaman to bring Opheim to the plate with two down. Opheim stepped up big, putting a towering fly ball down the right-field line which clipped the fielder's glove to bring both runners home for a 3-1 advantage heading into the final inning of play. With their backs against the wall, the Mountain Lions sent a single to the outfield. Shanks followed with her second strikeout of the afternoon. Defense stepped up big as a 6-4-3 double play gave the Skyhawks a weekend-opening win.

Game Two: Fort Lewis 4, UCCS 0
The game's first true threat came in the top of the third when UCCS loaded the bases on a single and two fielding errors. Starting pitcher freshman Hailie Mann settled down in the circle, throwing into a groundout to second base to keep the game scoreless. The Skyhawks got one on base in the fourth when sophomore Jadyn Gilley singled through the left side with one out. UCCS picked up an out, recovering from a dropped fly ball in right field to get the lead runner. The third out of the frame came on what looked to be a base hit to the wall from Rodman, but a good route from the fielder resulted in out number three.

The excitement from the fourth inning carried over into the fifth with the Mountain Lions putting a runner on second base with a base hit. Mann fielded her position well in the circle, corralling a grounder up the middle and checking the runner and recording an out to make it one away. A sprinting grab from Daugherty in right field ended the threat to preserve the scoreless affair. Junior Sloan Shotton got the home half of the fifth going with a laser double to the wall in centerfield. Opheim followed that up with a clutch walk to put two on for sophomore Hannah Rutherford. Rutherford attempted to lay down a pair of sacrifice bunts, but the effort resulted in two strikes on the sophomore. Rutherford made the most of her final strike, though, belting her first homer of the season to left field for a 3-0 lead.

The Mountain Lions responded with a leadoff single up the middle in the sixth inning. Once again, it was time for some defensive magic for the team in blue. Tenorio made a veteran move from her shortstop position, snagging a blistering one-hopper and touching two before gunning down the batter racing to first for a 6-3 double play. The final out of the inning came by way of a pop-out to Tenorio to preserve the three-run lead. Fort Lewis tacked on the game's fourth run in the bottom of the inning, picking up an RBI double to the gap in left-center off the bat of Rodman. UCCS executed a ground out to shortstop to hold the score at 4-0 leading into the seventh. Defense shut the door, recording a trio of outs to shut the door.
