Skyhawks Dominate in Sunday Sweep Over Cowgirls, Return Home With Four Wins

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Fort Lewis College softball team dominated in all phases of the game on Sunday, coming away with a pair of wins over New Mexico Highlands University to earn its first four-game series sweep of the season.

Fort Lewis improves to 12-25 overall and 12-16 in RMAC play while NMHU dips to 7-31, 5-23 RMAC.

Game One: Fort Lewis 7, NMHU 2
Both starting pitchers were mowing down the batters through two innings before Taylor Beaman knocked a double to right-center for the first hit of the day. The hit was harmless in nature, though, with a groundout to shortstop flipping the lineup over. The Cowgirls finally broke the game open in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a leadoff double to put a runner in scoring position. The second batter of the inning roped a triple to right field to score the game's first run. The following batter put a charge into one, sending a double to the wall to score another run and put the home squad up 2-0.

Like clockwork, the Skyhawks found a response to the brief deficit. Alex Tenorio tied it up with a single swing, launching a two-run homer to left-center to knot it up at 2-2. The tie didn't last long either as a Jadyn Gilley triple scored Katie Pippel from first for a 3-2 lead. The narrow lead held through the seventh inning when the Skyhawks found a way to add some insurance. Gilley earned her second RBI of the day on a fielder's choice to double the lead at 4-2. From there, Cara Daugherty and Sydney Stewart tallied singles to break the game open in a 7-2 score. Starting pitcher Hailie Mann made quick work of the Cowgirls in the bottom of the inning to close it out in a 7-2 final.

Game Two: Fort Lewis 14, NMHU 4
The short intermission between games did little to cool the hot bats of the Skyhawks with a three-run first inning coming by way of two hits and three fielding errors. The score held through three innings of play before an RBI single off the bat of Jaden Blaise Redus made it a 4-0 advantage. Little by little, the Skyhawks added more to the run column, this time with an RBI single from Cat Rodman to score Faith Sgro.

Pitching and defense continued to work around scattered singles to hold the Cowgirls without a run through five innings of play. While NMHU grew more frustrated at the plate, Fort Lewis continued to find ways to elevate their game. The Skyhawks picked up singles from Stewart and Taylar Tso to put a pair on for Pippel. Pippel continued to come through in clutch moments, doubling to the gap in right-center to clear the bases en route to a 7-0 lead. NMHU finally broke through in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff home run to make it 7-1. The home team tacked on another on an RBI single, but starting pitcher Amiee Shanks induced a flyout to hold the lead at five runs.

The reaction from the Skyhawks after giving up a pair of runs was exactly what you want to see, first with a leadoff home run from Rodman to bring it to 8-2. From there, a handful of Skyhawks got in on the RBI action, highlighted by a two-run homerun from Tatum Caldwell for a 14-2 score heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Cowgirls didn't go down quietly, getting two runs back before a groundout to Tenorio at short ended things in a 14-4 game.
