Skyhawks Make it Six-Straight With Key Home Sweep Over Roadrunners

DURANGO, Colo. – The freshman duo of Amiee Shanks and Hailie Mann in the circle, aided by timely hitting and energetic defense, led the Fort Lewis College softball team to a huge home sweep over MSU Denver on Friday, keeping the Skyhawks in good positioning in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings as the conclusion of the regular season draws nearer.

With the sweep, Fort Lewis improves to 14-25 and 14-16 in the RMAC while MSU Denver drops to 29-16 overall and 17-11 in the league. The Skyhawks sit in seventh place in league standings while the Roadrunners are solidly in fourth place.

Game One: Fort Lewis 6, MSU Denver 4
Cat Rodman put the Skyhawks ahead with two outs in the bottom of the first, crushing a high inside pitch over the fence in left field for a 2-0 lead. The Roadrunners rallied in the top of the second, scoring one run on an infield error to narrow the game. Two hitters later, MSU Denver sent a screaming liner down the left-field line to score two and take a 3-2 lead.

Fort Lewis charged back in the bottom of the second inning with power on display yet again. First, Sloan Shotton went opposite field with a dinger over the left-field fence to tie it. Madyson Devers kept it going with a line drive to the gap in right-center. Devers came around to score moments later when Alex Tenorio went yard, putting the home team back ahead 5-3. Starting pitcher Amiee Shanks wiped away a scoring threat in the top of the third, earning two looking strikeouts to close the door.

The Skyhawks were able to double the lead in the bottom of the inning with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Jadyn Gilley on an impressive hook slide. That 6-3 mark would stand through four as the teams moved into the fifth inning. MSU Denver put two runners aboard in the fifth, but a lazy flyout to left field preserved the three-run lead. While the fifth went by without much damage, the sixth looked to be shaking up to be a different story.

The Roadrunners put the first two batters on base with singles before a foul out to Sydney Stewart saw one down. A walk loaded them up, but defense was behind Shanks in the circle. Katie Pippel snagged a shallow fly ball in right field and gunned down the runner attempting to score from third to hold the score at 6-3. MSU Denver earned a sacrifice fly RBI in the seventh inning, making it 6-4, but another swinging K from Shanks secured the series-opening win.

Game Two: Fort Lewis 4, MSU Denver 2
The visitors got on the scoreboard from the jump, going ahead 2-0 with a single to the gap in the right-center. Fort Lewis got those back and then some in the bottom of the frame. Tenorio and Pippel got on base with a single and double, respectively, and Gilley came through with a base hit to left-center to score the pair. Shotton sent the third run home moments later with a double through the left side for a 3-2 lead. Starting pitcher Hailie Mann worked around a leadoff walk in the top of the second, inducing a pair of pop-outs to hold the lead.

The Skyhawks added some insurance to the narrow lead in the bottom of the second frame, sending Tenorio home on a Gilley double down the leftfield line for a 4-2 edge. While the opening innings were offense-heavy, the innings to follow could not have differed more. Each ensuing attack from the Roadrunners was silenced by Mann in the circle who continued to paint the corners for a handful of strikeouts through five.

Mann's most impressive inning came when the Skyhawks were just three outs away from the sweep. The freshman led it off with a swinging strikeout to set the tone. The MSU Denver shortstop continued her dazzling day at the plate with a one-out single to left-center to extend the inning. The following batter sent a twirling shot back to Mann who secured the out at first base, leaving one out to play with. Mann quickly got ahead with two strikes and looked to find the third, but the umpire didn't agree, and the count moved to 1-2. Mann recollected herself and fired the final pitch of the game for her eighth strikeout of the game to earn the win. Mann had eight strikeouts in the win to mark a career-high.
