A Saturday Walk-Off Win Secures the Series for the Skyhawks

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College softball team salvaged a split on Saturday against MSU Denver, earning a 5-4 walk-off win in game four of the series off the bat of Cat Rodman. The Skyhawks move to 15-26 on the year and 15-17 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and have slid into sixth place in league standings.

Game One: MSU Denver 13, Fort Lewis 2 (five innings)
After being swept on day one, the MSU Denver bats were rearing to go in the third game of the series. The visitors got ahead quickly, carrying a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the first inning. The Skyhawks bit back, earning a leadoff single from Alex Tenorio to start to rally. Sloan Shotton sliced a single up the middle to score Jadyn Gilley from third for a 1-0 game before a flyout ended the inning. The Roadrunners punched right back in the top of the second inning with three runs on three hits to go ahead 6-1.

Similar to the first inning, Fort Lewis got one back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI sacrifice fly from Katie Pippel to make it 6-2. The real damage was done in the third inning, first with a pair of runs crossing home courtesy of a throwing error. Another run scored on a throwing miscue to see the score at 9-2. MSU Denver added another on a groundout, followed by a huge three-run homer to right-center to move the score to 13-2. That score would prove to be the final as a fifth-inning flyout ended things in run-rule fashion.

Game Two: Fort Lewis 5, MSU Denver 4
The finale looked to be following a similar storyline to the first game of the day aw MSU Denver quickly got ahead 2-0 in the first inning. That score held until the bottom of the third inning when a Jadyn Gilley single up the middle scored Tenorio and Stewart to tie it at 2-2. Hailie Mann continued to groove in the circle, holding the score at 2's until the top of the fifth. The Roadrunners came through with their second home run of the ballgame to double up the lead at 4-2.

The lead was short-lived, though, as a huge double-off the bat of Pippel scored Stewart and Tenorio to see things at 4-4 after five innings of play. Mann buckled down in the circle with a win on the line, facing the minimum in the sixth and seventh to give the Skyhawks one last chance to earn the win before extra innings.

Fort Lewis was up for the challenge, getting a leadoff single from Jaden Blaise Redus to put a runner aboard. The Roadrunner defense was able to pick up a quick two-outs, sending the leadoff runner back to the dugout. Tatum Caldwell got on base with a tough shot to shortstop which resulted in a throwing error, seeing runners on the corners with two gone. Cat Rodman stepped to the plate and understood the assignment. The cleanup hitter turned on an inside pitch, sending a screaming shot down the line and off the glove of the third baseman, giving Pippel enough time to score from third for the dramatic walk-off statement win.
