Series Opener Goes to the Skyhawks in Sweep of Yellow Jackets

DURANGO, Colo. – Complete games from the freshman hurlers Amiee Shanks and Hailie Mann led the Fort Lewis College softball team to a sweep over Black Hills State University in the reverse site doubleheader on Saturday. The Skyhawks have now won nine of their last 10 games to sit in favorable standings in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference ranks.

The wins lift Fort Lewis to 17-26 overall and an even 17-17 in the RMAC while BHSU drops to 10-26, 8-24 RMAC.

Game One: Fort Lewis 6, Black Hills State 4
The Yellow Jackets looked to have made quick work of the Skyhawks in the top of the first inning, but Jadyn Gilley had something to say about that. The sophomore slugger turned on a tight, inside pitch and sent it deep for a home run to make it 1-0. BHSU tied it up in the bottom of the second, earning two-straight singles and a hit by pitch to load them up. The following batter took a handful of close calls that were chalked up as balls from blue's perspective to walk a game-tying run.

The Skyhawks were in good position to tack on another run in the third inning, picking up a one-out double from Alex Tenorio to see a runner in scoring position. The following two batters sent solidly struck shots to both left and right field, but plays were made on both the preserve the tie. Similarly, the Yellow Jackets got a runner aboard with a questionable walk call in the third inning. Amiee Shanks and Madyson Devers put together a mishit foul out for the first of the frame. Next, Shanks made the batter fish for one, earning the strikeout while Devers gunned down the runner trying to steal second for the inning's third out.

Shanks got out of trouble in the fourth inning, leaving a pair stranded with a perfectly placed strikeout to put the bats in the hands of the blue and gold. With momentum swinging their way, the Skyhawks filled the bases for Cat Rodman. Rodman, poised as always, dropped a single in front of the left fielder to plate Tenorio. Cara Daugherty broke the game open in the following at-bat, sneaking a single just out of the reach of the right fielder to score a pair for the 4-1 lead. Rodman would then take advantage of a passed ball to make it 5-1, followed by an RBI sac fly off the bat of Sloan Shotton to extend the lead to 6-1.

The big bopper for the Yellow Jackets cut into the lead in the fifth, doubling to Daugherty in centerfield to plate the runner from second. Another run crossed on a routine groundout to second base to make it a 6-3 game. Jaden Blaise Redus gobbled up a hard-hit grounder to second to close out the inning without further damage. With the scoring vibe still clinging to the team from Spearfish, an RBI double up the middle made it a 6-4 game heading into the seventh.

BHSU was defensively stout in the top of the frame, sending things into the final half-inning with the lead at two runs. Rodman picked up the first out of the inning courtesy of a line drive snag. The following batter singled to see runners on the corners, but a huge catch just outside of the circle by Tenorio put two outs on the board. Shanks was ready to call it a game, though, striking out her eight batter of the contest for her 10th win of the season.

Game Two: Fort Lewis 10, Black Hills State 4
The home team in the lineup card was the first to strike, plating a run on a diving fielder's choice play from Taya Opheim up the middle. Hailie Mann won an extended battle with the cleanup hitter, though, ending the inning with a looking K. Tenorio registered the team's first hit in the third inning, but the freshman was left stranded as a flyout to left field held the Skyhawks off the board. The Yellow Jackets earned a one-out single in the bottom of the inning, but a drifting foul ball found the glove of Sydney Stewart for the team's second scoreless inning of work.

Fort Lewis was looking to turn the tides in the fourth, earning a walk and an infield bunt single from Shotton. Both runners would advance courtesy of a passed ball to put two in scoring position with one out. Jolynn Niegocki navigated a huge walk, battling back from a 1-2 count to load them up for Stewart. Patience was a virtue for Stewart who dropped a single into shallow right field, easily scoring one run. The next two runs of the play came on a play at the plate which escaped from the opposing catcher, allowing two more to cross for a 3-1 score. Stewart would eventually come home on a wild pitch that clipped the pitcher's hip on the windup and ended up in the dugout.

The Skyhawks continued to break open the game, this time in the fifth inning. Pippel and Gilley went back-to-back with singles and advanced 60 feet on a passed ball. Rodman was up for the task of bringing her teammates home, doubling to center field to increase the lead to 6-1. Two more came across via RBI base hits from Shotton and Stewart for an 8-1 game after five innings of play. BHSU picked up a leadoff double in their following at-bat to put one in scoring position. That runner came around to score on a standup double to left-center.  Fielding errors allowed for the score to shift to 8-4 heading into the sixth.

If errors were plaguing the Skyhawks in the fifth, a similar experience was had by the Yellow Jackets in the home half of the sixth. Fort Lewis was able to score two runs to make it a 10-4 lead before Gilley was thrown out at home for the third out of the inning. Mann found her groove to move the game into the seventh, firing two strikeouts to bring her total to six for the outing. Fort Lewis went down quickly in the top of the seventh, bringing on the final half-inning of the day. Defense made up for earlier woes, picking up an incredibly 5-3-2 double play to see the team one away. Pippel collected the final out of the inning on a trailing fly ball to seal the 10-4 win for the Skyhawks.
