Skyhawks Drop Sunday Finale Doubleheader to Mountain Lions

DURANGO, Colo. – The visiting Mountain Lions found their bats on Sunday, evening the series a two apiece with 9-0 and 8-7 scores to close out the weekend. Fort Lewis sits at 8-25 overall and 8-16 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play after the weekend draw while UCCS moved to 18-14, 16-8 RMAC.

Day One: UCCS 9, Fort Lewis 0
The Mountain Lions were ready to go right from first pitch, putting balls in play and forcing a fielding error to extend the inning. The visitors would go on to load the bases, and an extended at-bat walk resulted in the game's first run. UCCS went on the double the lead in the second inning, taking advantage of a walk and a double to right field to bring it to 2-0. The Skyhawks had something brewing in the bottom of the frame with a fielding error and infield single from Taya Opheim. A sharply hit ground ball to shortstop closed out the frame without an FLC run.

More pressure from the opposing offense forced a pitching change in the third, bringing in Hailie Mann with one out and two in scoring position. The Mountain Lions didn't shy away, sending a deep sacrifice fly to center field to score the lead runner from third, extending the lead to 4-0. UCCS added another with a blistering single that ricocheted off the shin of Mann, allowing the runner from home enough time to score safely. The Mountain Lions continued to groove in the batter's box, finding space in left-center to score two and increase the lead to 7-0.

UCCS put the game in run-rule territory with a single to the outfield to score one, making it an 8-0 ball game. Fort Lewis recorded the first out of the inning on a shallow fly ball to Hannah Rutherford in center, but the Mountain Lions countered with a sac fly to left field to extend the lead. Cat Rodman ended the inning by tracking down a fly ball in left-field foul territory to put the bats back in the hands of the home squad. The Skyhawks got the first two runners aboard with a hit by pitch and walk, but an infield pop out had one gone. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, but a foul out to first base had the Skyhawks down to their final out. The Mountain Lions' reliever pitched into another pop-out to close out the game in run-rule fashion.

Day Two:
The Skyhawks quickly got ahead thanks to Alex Tenorio 's seventh triple of the season. The freshman would then show off the wheels, scoring on an RBI ground out off the bat of Katie Pippel for a 1-0 lead. The lead wouldn't last long as an RBI sac fly for UCCS knotted it at 1-1. A tie game wasn't in the cards, though, as a huge second inning pushed the blue and gold ahead. It all started with a hit by pitch to Rodman, but the bats did all the damage from there. Rutherford, Tenorio, and Pippel tallied three-straight RBI knocks to make it a 5-1 ballgame. A pitching change was the right move with a swinging K to end the threat and leave two stranded.

The Mountain Lions got one back in the top of the fourth, ripping a double to the game to score a runner from second. The visitors wasted no time getting the third run of the game with a fielding error scoring another run from second. The game became a one-run affair in the following at-bat with a single up the middle scoring another Mountain Lion all the way from second base. The run that would tie to ballgame up yet again came on a Skyhawk fielding miscue, sending the score to 5-5 before a line out to Rutherford in center ended the onslaught. The trend continued into the bottom of the fourth when Gilley scored her teammate Tenorio from third for a narrow 6-5 lead. The Skyhawks would go on to load them up, but a flyout to left field ended the threat.

The lead remained at one until the bottom of the fifth when Opheim sent a sharp liner to the gap in right-center to score Sloan Shotton from second, making it a 7-5 lead. UCCS got out of the inning with a line drive out to center field off the bat of Pippel, holding the lead at two heading into the sixth. UCCS started to chip away in the sixth, sending a runner home on a throwing error out of the hand of the Fort Lewis catcher. As if the teams would have it any other way, a single up the middle would send across the tying run in a 7-7 deadlock.

The score held heading into the seventh with both teams looking to find some late-game magic. UCCS got it started first, putting the leadoff runner aboard with a single through the right side. The second batter of the frame had an identical outcome, chipping in a similar-looking single to see runners on first and second. The third batter up executed a sac bunt to move both baserunners into scoring position with one gone. The sacrifice proved to be a smart choice as a routine groundout pushed the leading run across. Tenorio gloved a line out to close out the inning with Fort Lewis down 8-7.

UCCS collected the first out of the inning via an infield fly, sending Opheim to the plate with one gone. Opheim dropped in a savvy infield single to put one on for the home team. The following batter went down after a tough at-bat, finding Tenorio up at the plate with two outs. Opheim advanced all the way to third on a stolen base and loose ball that made its way behind the bag to have the tying run 60 feet away. Unfortunately, the late-game press came to an end with a strike just clipped the corning for a strikeout to close it out.
