Late Heroics Guide Skyhawks to Exhilarating Sweep Over Yellow Jackets

DURANGO, Colo. – Late inning heroics, including a wild three-run no-doubter from Sydney Stewart, guided the Fort Lewis College softball team to a key sweep over Black Hills State University to close out the series on Sunday. Nine of the team's 11 runs on the day came in the sixth and seventh innings of the doubleheader.

Fort Lewis improves to 19-26 overall and 19-17 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while BHSU falls to 10-28 on the year and 8-28 in the league. The Skyhawks sit in sole possession of sixth place in the conference heading into the final week of the regular season with the top six teams receiving bids for the conference tournament.

Game One: Fort Lewis 7, Black Hills State 6
The Skyhawks collected a pair of singles in the bottom of the opener, but the opposing defense was able to collect a trio of outs to keep it scoreless. The Yellow Jackets were able to load them up in the second inning with three nearly identical singles up the middle and scored the game's first run on a hit by pitch. Shanks settled down in the circle, knocking down a shot up the middle to pick up a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

BHSU doubled the lead in the following inning, benefitting from a leadoff single that came around to score with help from a passed ball and RBI knock to left field. Fort Lewis managed to cut into the lead in the following at-bats, picking up a single and stolen base from Cara Daugherty to put one in scoring position. Taylor Beaman came through, like she often does, singling up the middle to make it a 2-1 score.

Alex Tenorio put the team in great position to knot the game up, earning her second single of the day to put a runner aboard. The freshman made her way over to third and tagged up to score on a Jadyn Gilley lineout to deep center field. The Yellow Jackets got out of a sticky situation when a runner was called out for leaving early to hold the score in a 2-2 tie.

The Yellow Jackets broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI double to the gap in right-center. Another run came around to score with a double to the fence to make it a 4-2 ballgame. The third run of the inning crossed the plate on a fielding miscue to push the lead to three runs. Tenorio had the Skyhawks off to a hot start in the seventh, tripling to the wall and scoring on a throw that got by the third baseman to make it 5-3. Gilley and Cat Rodman went back-to-back with singles to put two on base with one gone.
The second out of the inning moved two into scoring position for Daugherty. She placed a base hit just out of the reach of a diving center fielder to plate Gilley for a 5-4 game. With their backs against the wall and just one out to work with, Sydney Stewart blasted an opposite-field home run to see a 7-5 lead—the team's first of the day. BHSU was able to get one back with an infield groundout, putting two outs on the board with the Fort Lewis lead at 7-6. Shanks buckled down, earning a strikeout of Tyler Whitlock (just her second of the season) to secure the win.

Game Two: Fort Lewis 4, Black Hills State 3
The theme of the weekend carried over into game four with the Yellow Jackets scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI sacrifice fly to right field. The Skyhawks defense got out of the inning with a play at shortstop to leave two stranded. Fort Lewis had an opportunity to tie it up in the third, getting two into scoring position on a Tenorio double down the line before a stout defensive effort at short ended the threat.

BHSU got the leadoff aboard with an infield single before the first out of the inning came via an infield fly sat one down. Defense took control from there as a 6-4-3 double play put the bats back into the hands of the Skyhawks in the fourth inning. The pace of play continued to leave a trail of dust in its wake as the game quickly moved into the fifth inning just 30 minutes after first pitch.

The lead extended to 3-0 after five innings as the Yellow Jackets earned a two-RBI double to right-center midway through the inning. Late inning magic was in the cards yet again for the Skyhawks, first with an RBI single from Rodman to score Tenorio. Sloan Shotton followed with an off-balance drag bunt that caused chaos on the defensive side of the ball, allowing for two runs to score while Shotton advanced to third. Daugherty brought Shotton home with a groundout to shortstop, giving Fort Lewis a 4-3 advantage.

Hailie Mann continued to twirl a great game, playing with the lead for the first time all afternoon and picking up two strikeouts in the sixth to carry the one-run lead into the seventh. As if the previous inning wasn't exhilarating enough, Fort Lewis saw two in scoring position with nobody gone behind a single and fielding error. Pippel was a hard-luck out on a bullet of a liner to third base that doubled off the runner trying to lead off the bag, holding the score at 4-3 in favor of the good guys. BHSU settled for a one-out single to but one aboard, but Fort Lewis secured the final two outs of the contest to run away with the win.
