Skyhawks Play Tough in Doubleheader Split With Rangers

DURANGO, Colo. – Aided by timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and fierce winds from all directions, the Fort Lewis College softball team earned a split with Regis University to open the series. The Skyhawks dropped the opener in a closely contested 2-0 final before rallying to earn a 4-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Fort Lewis moves to 20-27 on the year and 20-18 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Regis shifts to 32-21 overall and 26-11 in the league. Regis sits comfortably in third place in the conference while Fort Lewis is in sixth, just ahead of Colorado School of Mines who is 16-18 in league play.

Game One: Regis University 2, Fort Lewis 0
Regis had back-to-back singles to open the game, but a pair of flyouts secured the scoreless inning for the Skyhawks who headed to the plate. The Rangers had a pair in scoring position yet again, this time in the second inning, but a stout play from Alex Tenorio closed the inning out without allowing a run to cross. The Skyhawks got runners on base in the bottom of the second, putting one in scoring position with a stolen bag from Cara Daugherty, but a swinging strikeout preserved the deadlock.

After a lengthy discussion between coaches and umpires to determine the outcome of a dead ball situation, the Rangers had runners on first and second with one out. Starting pitcher Amiee Shanks pitched into a jam pop-up to second base, and then Cat Rodman made a SportsCenter Top-10 diving catch in left field to halt the momentum. Katie Pippel broke the hitless affair for Fort Lewis in the third, sending a line shot down the left-field line for a two-out single. Jadyn Gilley followed that up with a nearly identical shot to see two aboard for the clean-up hitter. Rodman put it in play, but a liner to center field closed the inning out.

The teams continued to cruise through four innings with solid defensive efforts highlighting both teams. A huge groundout up the middle that clipped Shanks' glove before finding Tenorio for the putout moved things into the bottom of the fifth with a couple goose eggs on the board. Regis' starting pitcher, Kylie Harpman, was still cruising through five as two looking strikeouts moved the game into the sixth. The Rangers broke out a leadoff double, followed by a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third with one out. The visitors picked up the game's first run moments later on an RBI sacrifice fly that fell into the glove of Pippel. Rodman secured the final out on a towering flyball to put the bats in the hands of the Skyhawks.

Fort Lewis had something cooking in the sixth, first with a loud single to left field from Rodman. Sloan Shotton followed with a single through the left side, but an executed groundout to second base ended the inning. The Rangers added insurance with a tough shot to left field to score the runner from first, but a diving grab from Jaden Blaise Redus at second base ended the inning. The Skyhawks threatened in the seventh, but nothing was going as the home squad fell by a 2-0 final.

Game Two: Fort Lewis 4, Regis University 2
Regis quickly got ahead when an RBI triple found the gap in right-center. Starting pitcher Hailie Mann settled down from there, pitching into a swinging strikeout and pop out to second base to close the inning. The Skyhawks applied pressure in the first inning as well, taking advantage of fielding miscues and a single from Rodman before a popped-up bunt eliminated the threat. Mann started to heat up in the second inning, racking up three strikeouts while facing the minimum to flip the scorecard.

The Skyhawks scored their first runs of the afternoon in the bottom of the second inning. First, Pippel sent a liner up the middle to tie it at 1-1. The team would then get some help from the opposing defense with a popup slipping out of the pitcher's glove to score two runs, allowing for a 3-1 lead after two. The Rangers cut into the lead in the fourth with an inside-the-park homerun squeaking in down the right-field line. The following inning went by quickly with a four-pitch fifth from Mann holding the score at 3-2. The Skyhawks threatened in the bottom of the frame, getting a pair on courtesy of a free pass and hit by pitch, but a flare out to shortstop left them stranded.

Regis loaded them up in top of the sixth, forcing Mann into a high-stress situation. Mann was up to the task, locating a strike under the hands to send the batter packing and preserve the 3-2 advantage. Fort Lewis added a much-needed insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, putting two on base with a walk and HBP. Daugherty scored from third when a throw from centerfield sailed wide to push the lead to 4-2. Mann earned a much-needed strikeout to lead off the inning to see one gone for the number nine hitter. The following batter, a lefty slapper in a pinch-hit situation, grounded out to shortstop and the final batter of the ballgame sent a lazy pop-fly to Tenorio to secure the win.
