Skyhawks Dominate in First Road Sweep of the Season

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Skyhawks were clutch in game one and explosive in game two, picking up a series-opening sweep over New Mexico Highlands University to kick off the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road trip.

Fort Lewis improves to 10-25 overall and 10-16 in RMAC play while NMHU dips to 7-29, 5-21 RMAC.

Game One: Fort Lewis 2, NMHU 1
Taya Opheim gave the Skyhawks their first lead of the day with a double to the gap in left-center to score Cara Daugherty from first base. NMHU answered back in the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back doubles to tie it up 1-1. The fourth and fifth innings went by quickly with just a double from Katie Pippel accounting for the Fort Lewis offense.

Fort Lewis looked to have an opportunity in the sixth inning with a pair of singles from Cat Rodman and Daugherty putting a pair aboard with nobody out. Madyson Devers advanced both baserunners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but a line-drive double play ended the inning to preserve the tie. Down to their final three outs, the Skyhawks got the seventh started with a single to left field. Alex Tenorio came up clutch moments later, roping a single through the left side to send the baserunner home for a 2-1 lead. The Cowgirls got out of trouble with a pair of outs to close the inning, but starting pitch Amiee Shanks closed the door with another quick inning for a 2-1 win.

Game Two: Fort Lewis 10, NMHU 2 (five innings)
Fort Lewis had a presence on the basepaths immediately to start game two, putting two aboard with walks before a flyout and strikeout put a pause on the threat. NMHU countered with a leadoff hit by pitch, but starting pitcher Hailie Mann worked around the blemish with a swinging K to end the inning. The Skyhawks had another two runners on base, this time with a walk and hit from Taylor Beaman, but a strikeout left goose eggs on the scoreboard.

The game was broken open in the third, led off by a single from Tenorio to put one on base. Pippel followed with a clutch RBI double to left-center to score the speedy freshman from first. The Cowgirls made a quick pitching change, but it didn't fool Rodman. The sophomore sent a single to left field to score Pippel for a 2-0 score. Sydney Stewart got in on the fun, sending a sacrifice fly to center to extend the lead to 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third. The home squad looked to have an opportunity to score with a leadoff double putting one in scoring position. Defense flashed the leather, though, picking up a groundout and 6-3-5 double play to eliminate the threat.

The lead extended further in the fourth, first with a single from Pippel to push Beaman across for a 4-0o game. Daughterty went on the clear the bases with a three-RBI double to left-center for an eye-popping 7-0 lead with two out. The Cowgirls made yet another pitching change, but it did little to slow down Stewart who plated her second RBI of the game with a double for an 8-0 advantage. NMHU found the final out of the inning, but the damage was done on a five-run, four-hit top of the fourth. The Cowgirls got two back in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a pair of doubles, making it 8-2 before a groundout to Tenorio closed the door.

The chess match continued into the fifth with RBI hits from Jadyn Gilley and Pippel pushing the game back into run-rule territory at 10-2. NMHU put the leadoff runner on with a single, but a trio of outs closed the game out in a 10-2 final score. The Skyhawks put on a clinic from the batter's box, tallying five doubles for an OPS of 1.302 en route to the statement win.
