FLC was the first to 15 points, taking advantage of the home team's second service error of the set to go ahead 15-10. Fort Lewis earned its first lead of the set at 8-7 off a dipping serve from Romero and continued to grow the lead thanks to errors from the purple and gold. Fort Lewis built the lead to five points, getting ahead 14-9, but a three-point push had the home team within two. The Mustangs continued to nip at the heels of the Skyhawks throughout the later part of the set, but poised control from the veteran leaders and a monstrous block from sophomore Ruthie Ridderhoff and Shea ended things in a 25-21 final score.

Set Three (25-13)
Lambos continued to run her offense through the middle, connecting with Ridderhoff on a quick for an early third-set lead. The teams traded points from there was an aggressive kill off the block from Romero had the score at 5-4. Errors continued to pile up for WNMU as a 20-12 score pushed the teams into a late timeout. Johnson picked up her eighth and ninth kills of the match in sequence on the slide to pull her team within three points of the sweep.

Quotes from Coach G
"We have been putting a lot of pressure on our ball control so we can take advantage of our middle attack. We are a threat for any team when we make a connection with our middle hitters, and it gives us a lot of options offensively while putting pressure on the opposing defense."

"Offense is expected to shine when it is in-system, so the difference making plays happen when we are out-of-system. We have been pushing our pin hitters in versatility and confidence to create opportunities in tough situations and it's paying off."

Game Two: UW Parkside 3, Fort Lewis 2
Fort Lewis his .168 as a team compared to a .180 clip for Parkside. The Skyhawks held an advantage in the digs category, coming away with 63 versus 58 for the Rangers. Parkside continued rolling out of the break, tallying three aces and a block to jump ahead 9-0. The pace of play was different in the second set when a handful of Ranger errors had the Skyhawks ahead 10-5. The lead extended with a soft, savvy shot over the block from Romero to bring on a timeout. Parkside rallied to pull within a pair, but another kill from Shea gave Fort Lewis a cushion. Set Three (25-16)
Tough serving from the opposition opened set three as aces and out-of-system passes allowed for a 5-1 lead before an authoritative swing from Butler found the floor. Butler made her presence known after coming off the bench, earning two more unanswered kills to pull Fort Lewis within one. The Skyhawks saw their first lead of the set moments later with a combined force of Butler and Romero denied an attempt from the team in white. Fort Lewis started to energize as kills from Hobie and Butler pushed the score to 22-13. The offensive connection was maintained through the final points of the set with a pair of kills leading the Skyhawks to a set advantage.

It was back and forth to begin the fourth with a Parkside kill off the block knotting it at sixes. Romero started to heat up with cross-court shots to extend the team's lead to 13-8. Comments from Coach G
"We trained hard in order to prepare for competition and to take on a team outside of our practice gym. We have been wanting to test ourselves for a while, so getting a win against a tournament host who competes in the LSC in such a dominant way is a confidence boost."

Up Next
Fort Lewis (1-1) will close out the Western New Mexico Tournament tomorrow morning with a 10:00 a.m. match versus Cal State East Bay.
