Narrow fifth set downs Skyhawks in opening weekend finale

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Another decisive fifth set fell in favor of the opposition as the Skyhawks volleyball team narrowly fell to Cal State East Bay, wrapping up the Western New Mexico Tournament with a 1-2 record.

"I am extremely proud of our performance this weekend. We faced some tough competition and showed up to battle," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "The depth of our roster is amazing, and I feel confident in each player being able to contribute at any given moment."

Fort Lewis started slow offensively, hitting at a .047 clip in set one before rebounding for a .177 mark for the match. East Bay had a more efficient outing, averaging a .258 hitting percentage for the match and tallying 62 kills. The Skyhawks totaled eight aces while applying consistent pressure at the end line to hold the Pioneers out of system.

Senior Rylee Johnson was active as ever in the middle, putting up 14 kills on 27 swings (.333) to go along with three blocks (two solo). Freshman Ella Butler rounded out the production in the middle, putting away 10 kills while racking up eight digs and a team-best four service aces.

"I am extremely proud of the way that Ella played. She is a very smart and composed competitor who came through for our team today in key moments," acknowledged Tarnauskaite.

Sophomores Natalia Lambos and Jade Martinez coordinated the offense with 22 and 16 assists, respectively. Senior libero Kamryn Lopez paced the team with 11 digs.

Set One (22-25)
Fort Lewis built an early lead behind kills from Johnson and Butler, by East Bay took advantage of miscues and kills from four players to knot the score at 11-11. The teams were deadlocked from there, seeing eight tied scores as the contest moved to 22-22. The Pioneers were tough toward the end, earning a solo block and a final kill out of the middle to claim the opener.

Set Two (15-25)
The second set got away from the Skyhawks from the jump as a handful of unforced errors brought the score to 16-8. Butler dropped in a kill for a quick side out, but the opposition countered with a pair of points to go ahead 18-9. Fort Lewis played even through the later portion of the set, but a 4-0 scoring run highlighted the closing points as East Bay ran away with a 25-15 decision.

Set Three (25-15)
Junior Lauren Shea took control of the offensive effort in the third set, carding two kills for an efficient start to the set. The teams were streaky from there with a 3-0 run for the red and a 4-0 run for the blue and gold moving the score to 8-6 in favor of Fort Lewis. The difference-maker came via a 7-0 streak that saw kills from Butler, Hobie, and Shea to move the score to 16-8. The Pioneers saw a small momentum shift late in the set, but a kill out of the middle from Johnson sealed the deal on a 25-15 winner.

Set Four (25-22)
The streaking trend carried over into the fourth as both teams enjoyed runs of four to tie the score at six apiece. The Skyhawks looked to have taken control of the set, going ahead 18-13, but four-straight East Bay kills pulled it within one. The score would tie at 22-22 via a service error, but a pair of authoritative kills from Hobie and the decider from Johnson sent things to the fifth set.

Set Five (14-16)
Butler opened the deciding set with a crafty kill in front of Lambos, but the Pioneers rallied to take a narrow lead. As if the scoring runs from the previous two sets weren't enough to have fans on the edge of their seats, East Bay rattled off four straight to go ahead 9-8 as the teams switched sides. Another string of points had the Pioneers within a pair of claiming the match, but a clutch run from the Skyhawks turned the tables. Butler kicked off the run with a thunderous kill, followed by a veteran solo stuff as the lead went to Fort Lewis at 14-13. Unfortunately, the momentum fell just short with East Bay scoring three in a row to see a 16-14 final in the fifth.

Up Next
Fort Lewis (1-2) is back on the road next week with a trip to the Lonestar Tournament in Lubbock, Texas. The Skyhawks start on Friday with a pair of matches versus Southwestern Oklahoma State University (11:00 a.m.) and Lubbock Christian University (3:00 p.m.).

"We have another tough tournament to prepare for in a very short time," said Tarnauskaite. "I am eager to get back in our gym and work on a few things that should make a big difference for us."
