Skyhawks battle elements in draw with the Chaps

DURANGO, Colo. – Rain, hail, and a lengthy stoppage in play did nothing to sway the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team as it battled to a 0-0 draw with Lubbock Christian University to close out the home slate on Saturday afternoon.

Lubbock held a 14-10 advantage in shots for the match despite the Skyhawks outshooting the opposition through the final half of play. Junior Madyson Barela led the team with four shots, one of which was on target. Sophomore Sabrina Reyes and freshman Anna Tucker each tallied two shots. Junior Katherine Dunbabin and sophomore Riley Bravin combined for the first shutout of the season—combining for eight saves along the way.

"We have such a good goalkeeping crew that I don't think it's fair to be so traditional that you only play one. We are trying to develop athletes, and they can't develop if they don't play," recognized Clarke. "We are really blessed to have as many good keepers as we do, and they will never be the reason that we lose the game."

Dunbabin was especially active in the opening minutes of the contest, turning away three shots on goal within the first 15 minutes of play. Lubbock continued to control the pace of play as the rain began to pour onto Dirks Field. Eventually, the weather got in the way of the Chaps' game plan as the teams entered what would be a 90-minute weather delay. The Skyhawks came out of the impromptu break with vigor, earning a pair of shots off the boot of Barela and controlling the ball with confidence not seen early in the game.

"Our intention coming out of our delay was to get the distances between our back line and midfield lines correct. We were so compressed because of their pressure that we couldn't find ways to play out," said head coach Damian Clarke. "As soon as we began going long we were able to take control of the match. That was our message to the team during the weather delay as we looked at those first 20 minutes of play."

Despite the adjustments made on the field, the score held at zeros heading into the second half of play. Sophomore Aubrey Swindle had the team's best look of the match in the 61st minute, controlling a long pass from freshman Rachel Peebles as she tore past two defenders into the top of the box. One-on-one with the keeper, Swindle sent a strong shot on goal, but a veteran move between the pipes held the game scoreless.

The latter half of the game saw Bravin active at goal, diving to meet the opposing attackers and holding her own in high-stress moments. The poise at goal paid dividends as the game ended in a 0-0 final score despite an onslaught of late attempts.

Fort Lewis (0-1-1) will be on the road for a pair of games next week. First, the Skyhawks take on West Texas A&M on Friday in Canyon, Texas, followed by a Sunday morning contest versus St. Mary's University to close out the road trip.

"It's going to be really fun to develop our relationships further when we get on the road next week," said Clarke. "Realistically, we are going to be facing a group that is likely to be a top-25 team in West Texas A&M, and it is an opportunity to take somebody down on their home field."
