Sturtevant ties for 13th, Skyhawks tie for 12th at Swan Memorial

THORNTON, Colo. – Brooke Sturtevant's individual performance led the Fort Lewis College women's golf team in the fall season opener. The Skyhawks took on the Swan Memorial, hosted by Colorado Christian University at the Todd Creek Golf Club this past Sunday through Tuesday.
 
"I'm very happy with the scores we posted," Fort Lewis College Head Coach Jim Foltz said. "The first tournaments of the year are really to see our team dynamics. Our ultimate goal is to win the RMAC so I've got to figure out who can keep fighting and show grit throughout the tournaments. Overall, I'm very proud of the performance we showed this week."
 
Sturtevant led the Skyhawks individual performances shooting a 74, 79, and 75 for a 228 overall (+12) and a tie for thirteenth place with Angelo State's Maria Sierra Sanz. Emma Tornoos finished in a tie for 37th shooting a 238 (+22). Kendal Gutierrez found a tie for 65th shooting a 254 (+38) while Emilia Manntz finished in a tie for 67th with a 255 (+39), and Peyton Glenn in 76th shooting a 262 (+46). Midwestern State's took first place in solo efforts shooting a 218, just two over par.
 
Inside the Scorecard
As a team the Skyhawks shot a 969, 105 strokes over par for the course. FLC dropped in 20 birdies alongside 114 pars on the course. Additionally, Fort Lewis had an average score of 3.68 on par threes, 4.63 on par fours, and 5.37 on par fives.
 
Day One (326, +38)
Sturtevant opened the week with a pair of birdies on holes four and seven, while Tornoos found a birdie on hole thirteen alongside Manntz with a birdie on hole twelve. All together it was 23 bogies, 21 double-bogies, a single triple-bogie, and a lone sextuple-bogie that raised the Skyhawks scorecards.
 
Day Two (321, +33)
Day two was the strongest performance for Fort Lewis, cutting the total double-bogies to seven, however a trio of triple-bogies and 34 bogies still held FLC above par. Tornoos led Fort Lewis with birdies on holes four, sixteen, and seventeen, while Sturtevant found a pair of birdies on holes one and six. Gutierrez and Glenn added birdies on hole fourteen while Manntz added the final birdie of the day on hole fifteen.
 
Day Three (322, +34)
Fort Lewis was able to eliminate the triple-bogie on day three, however 35 bogies and 10 double-bogies still kept FLC from cutting down its final score. Gutierrez, Glenn, and Sturtevant each had a pair of birdies on the final day while Tornoos provided one final birdie as well.
 
Next Up
Next up for the Skyhawks women is the Ruidoso Junior Golf Association South Central Shootout on Sept. 25-27. The shootout will take place at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Arizona, and will be hosted by Western New Mexico University.
