Cross country impresses in a field of regional foes at Roadrunners Invite

DENVER, Colo. – Personal bests in a nationally ranked field highlighted the MSU Denver Roadrunner Invite on Saturday at Washington Park.

Women's Results
Fort Lewis finished fourth in the field of 11 squads racing in the 6k—compiling 143 points on the day. The team finished ahead of No. 4 UCCS (143) who is ranked second in the South Central Region. The Skyhawks also finished ahead of MSU Denver and Westminster College who rank ninth and tenth in the region, respectively. The Skyhawks ran for an average of 23:40.36 with a spread of 2:09.50.

Sophomore Katie Fankhouser led the team with an 11th place finish in the stacked field. Fankhouser ran a time of 22:23.80, missing a top-10 finish by just .10. Senior Angel Curley crossed the line in 29th place with a time of 23:25.80. The team's next finisher was sophomore Carmella Wright whose time of 23:43.00 put her in 35th place overall. Rounding out the top-five for Fort Lewis was the duo of sophomore Sophia Mena (24:15.90, 49th) and senior Esther Beck (24:33.30, 59th).

"We knew this meet was a shot to prove ourselves in the region, and the women did just that," said head coach Shawn Jakubowski. "The depth of this squad is incredible and played a big factor in the race today. I'm proud of the fight that these women have, and this was a huge race for the program. It's time to focus on training for a few weeks before our next racing block."

Men's Results
The Skyhawks totaled 195 points which placed them eighth overall in the 10-team 8k field. The team finished ahead of Texas A&M International and Westminster College. The field included No. 2 Colorado School of Mines, No. 7 Colorado Christian, and No. 30 CSU Pueblo. Fort Lewis ran for an average of 26:07.70 with a 1:10.20 spread.

Sophomore Bean Minor led the team with a 30th place finish with a time of 25:39.80 in his first collegiate meet. Freshman Brady Burrough followed closely behind at 25:40.60 which was good for 31st place. Finishing in 33rd place was sophomore Max Robinson at 25:49.40, followed by freshman Aaron Busche (26:38.71, 49th) and junior Javier Victorino (26:50.00, 52nd).

"Each of our athletes ran a personal best today, and I can't ask for much more than that. At the same time some guys know there is a lot of room to grow," said head coach Joshua Coon. "Bean and Brady were really strong and worked together. I could see both of them making a mark at the end of the season."

Fort Lewis will be back at it on October 7 when the teams host the annual Tom Strandt Memorial meet at the Hillcrest Golf Course.
