Skyhawks hit the road, face Eagles and Cougars in RMAC play

DURANGO, Colo. – After kicking off the new year on its home court, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team is on the road for a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchups.

First, the Skyhawks will travel to Nebraska to face Chadron State College for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off on Friday. The trip wraps up on Saturday at Colorado Christian University with a 5:00 p.m. start.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis battled tough but ultimately fell in a 65-56 final to UCCS at home on Friday. The Skyhawks shot 34 percent (16-of-47) from the field versus a 40 percent (26-of-65) clip for the Mountain Lions. Fort Lewis dropped in seven shots from beyond the arc compared to zero from UCCS. The visitors took advantage of 16 offensive rebounds and 27 turnovers on the side of the Skyhawks.

Lanae Billy had 26 points to lead all players, and the freshman was 5-of-7 from three for the contest. Junior Kelsey Sorenson followed with 10 points and five rebounds while graduate student Kaitlyn Bell had nine points and seven boards. UCCS was led by Jessica Nation's 18 points, followed by Maison White (15pts) and Gracie Haneborg (10pts).

On Saturday, the Skyhawks fell in a defensive dandy against Regis University by a 60-50 final score. The Skyhawks were limited to a field goal percentage of 23.8 (15-of-63) for the contest—a season-low through 14 games. The Rangers ended things with a field goal percentage of 31.7 (20-of-63). Fort Lewis connected on five three-pointers versus four for Regis. Fort Lewis matched a season-high with 45 rebounds (17 offensive) compared to 50 for the Rangers.

Fort Lewis was led by Sorenson and sophomore Avery Evans who each contributed 10 points. Sorenson was the leading rebounder at eight while graduate student Kaitlyn Bell came down with seven on the night. The Skyhawks had 13 players see the floor and were led in minutes by Evans at 32:42. Regis was led by an 18-point, 21-rebound effort from Erin Stroberg.

Scouting Chadron State College
Chadron State sits 2-13 overall and 2-7 in the league while riding a four-game losing skid. The team is 2-5 at home and 0-8 on the road this season. Chadron's two wins have come by way of New Mexico Highlands (Dec. 3, 89-60) and MSU Denver (Dec. 31, 77-70). Last week, the Eagles were downed by Colorado Mesa (76-31) and Westminster (83-57).

The team is averaging 59.1 points per game to rank 14th in the conference and allows 74.5 points per game from the opposition. The Eagles come away with 35.8 rebounds per game and 6.9 steals per game. Ashayla Powers is leading the team with 16.7 points per game on a .532 field goal percentage. She is also the leading rebounder at 6.2 per game. Samiyah Worrell ranks second in scoring at 10.2 points per game to go along with 3.9 rebounds per game. Kadyn Comer is averaging a team-best 2.5 assists per game in addition to 2.7 rebounds and one steal per game.

Fort Lewis leads the all-time series with a 14-2 advantage despite dropping last season's December meeting by a 72-49 final. The Skyhawks are 8-0 against the Eagles at home and 6-2 inside the Chicoine Center. Fort Lewis shot 32.7 percent from the field and 21.7 percent from three in last season's meeting compared to marks of 45.1 percent and 37.5 percent for Chadron.

Scouting Colorado Christian University
Colorado Christian is 6-9 on the year and 2-7 in conference play having lost six-straight dating back to December 10. This past week featured losses on the road to Westminster (80-74) and Colorado Mesa (52-29). In the loss to Mesa, the Cougars shot just 18 percent (9-of-50) from the field and 7.7 percent (1-of-13) from three.

Despite going cold offensively, the Cougars rank fourth in the RMAC in team field goal percentage at .400. They are one of the top rebounding teams, too, averaging 40.5 per game to sit third in the field of 15 teams. A flurry of players are putting up numbers offensively, led by Maggie Phipps' 9.6 points per game. Phipps, a transfer from Drake University, has seen the floor in just five games this season, all of which have come in the past month. Four players put up eight points per game to round out leading scorers. Agnes Paul leads the rebounding charge by averaging 7.7 per game.

Fort Lewis leads the all-time series at 15-10 and split the pair of games last season. First, the Skyhawks earned an exhilarating 67-66 win at home, followed by a narrow 65-63 loss on the road in February. Senior Alyssa Adams had 17 points in the win while junior Kelsey Sorenson pulled down eight rebounds.

Around the RMAC
Colorado School of Mines continues to lead the league with an unblemished 9-0 RMAC record to go along with a 13-1 overall mark. Westminster follows with a 7-2 record which includes a loss to Fort Lewis in December. Regis University rounds out the top three with a 6-2 mark in league play. Fort Lewis sits 10th in the field of 15 teams with a conference record of 3-5.

In the national landscape, the RMAC is represented by Mines on the most recent D2SIDA top-25 poll, ranking 7th overall. In the WBCA top-25 poll (voted on by coaches), Mines sits in 9th.

Inside the Box Scores
Freshman Lanae Billy continues to pace the team by averaging 17.1 points per game—third in the RMAC. Billy has surpassed 20 points on six occasions, including a season-high 26-point outing on Friday versus UCCS. Junior Kelsey Sorenson follows by averaging 12.3 points per game (18th in RMAC) to go along with 7.6 rebounds per game (7th in RMAC).

Sophomore Avery Evan ranks third on the team by averaging 8.4 points per game, followed by graduate student Kaitlyn Bell at 6.4 points per game. Bell's 6.4 rebounds per game are second on the roster and 13th in the conference.

Up Next
Fort Lewis is back home next week for a Friday/Saturday slate against Colorado Mesa University and Westminster College. The Skyhawks faced CMU in nonconference action on Sunday, November 27, and fell by a 78-61 final. Fort Lewis claimed a 63-62 win over the Griffins on December 17.

The series opens on Friday at 5:30 p.m. for the annual White Out game versus the Mavericks. Fort Lewis is 5-14 all-time against CMU and has lost nine straight.

Saturday's game kicks off at 5:00 p.m. against Westminster. Fort Lewis leads the series by an 8-6 margin, dating back to the series opener in 2015.
