Surging Cougars down Skyhawks to close out road trip

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Sharp shooting by Colorado Christian University downed the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team by a final score of 90-61 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Fort Lewis fell to 6-10 overall and 3-7 in the RMAC while Colorado Christian improved to 7-10, 3-8 RMAC.

The Skyhawks shot 36.2 percent (21-of-58) from the field versus an impressive 56.5 percent (35-of-62) mark for the Cougars. Colorado Christian connected on a season-high 10 three-pointers compared to five for Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks were outrebounded by a 44-25 margin.

Freshman Lanae Billy led the team with 17 points and two steals, followed by fellow freshman Kate Gallery with a career-high nine points. Junior Kelsey Sorenson followed with eight points and a team-best five rebounds while sophomores Avery Evans and Sadie Misner each picked up seven points.

The teams traded points to open the game, led by a four-point scoring effort from Sorenson through the first three minutes. The Skyhawks were quiet over the following possessions as the Cougars built a 14-6 lead through five minutes of play. Freshman Audra Vine, getting her first start of the season, drained a three to break the scoreless skid as the score moved to 20-9 in favor of Colorado Christian. Gallery scored a three of her own, her first as a Skyhawk, but the Cougars would not let up as the scoreboard reflected a 28-12 deficit after 10 minutes of play.

The Cougars forged ahead further in the second quarter, opening play by going on a 10-0 scoring run before a three-pointer by senior Alyssa Adams had the Skyhawks on the board. Sophomore Sadie Misner contributed a layup, followed by a late three from Billy to move the score to 50-23 with just over a minute remaining in the half. The teams were scoreless to close out the half with Fort Lewis down by 27. The Skyhawks show 24.1 percent from the field in the opening half compared to a 52.9 percent clip for the Cougars.

Colorado Christian scored on a pair of opportunities in the opening minutes of the third quarter before a layup from Billy had Fort Lewis on the board. Billy started to take over from there, going on a 4-0 run of her own to cut the Cougars' lead. Gallery added to the points total at the 5:06 mark when she pulled down an offensive board for a putback to make it 57-31. The squads were evenly matched with 10 points apiece down the stretch as the score shifted to 67-41 with one quarter to play.

The freshman duo of Vine and Gallery teams up for five points through the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, sending the teams into a timeout with a 74-49 score. Despite the scoring efforts from the young Skyhawks, the Cougars continued to forge ahead behind tough defense and three-point shooting to see an 83-51 advantage. Misner went on a tear late in the quarter, kicked off by a free throw make, and closed out with a pair of driving layups to bring her point total to nine. Sophomore Samantha Wattawa was the team's final scorer on Saturday night, dropping in a jumper to close the game out in a 90-61 final.

Fort Lewis (6-10, 3-7 RMAC) is back home next week for a Friday/Saturday slate against Colorado Mesa University and Westminster College. The Skyhawks faced CMU in nonconference action on Sunday, November 27, and fell by a 78-61 final. Fort Lewis claimed a 63-62 win over the Griffins on December 17.

The series opens on Friday at 5:30 p.m. for the annual White Out game versus the Mavericks. Fort Lewis is 5-14 all-time against CMU and has lost nine straight.

Saturday's game kicks off at 5:00 p.m. against Westminster. Fort Lewis leads the series by an 8-6 margin, dating back to the series opener in 2015.
