Women's basketball drops weekend opener to No. 14/22 Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team saw 11 players record points in a 74-45 road loss to No. 14/22 Colorado School of Mines at the Lockridge Arena on Friday night.

Fort Lewis dropped to 7-12 on the year and 4-9 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Mines improved to 16-3 and 12-2 overall to lead the league.

The Skyhawks shot 34.8 percent (15-of-46) from the field compared to a 41.3 percent (26-of-63) mark for the Orediggers. Mines connected on nine three-pointers versus just three for Fort Lewis. Rebounds were nearly even with Fort Lewis edging out Mines by a 39-38 margin. The Skyhawks committed a season-high 32 turnovers which led to 31 points for the opposition.

Junior Kelsey Sorenson led the team with her fourth double-double of the season at 14 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Lanae Billy followed with eight points, three rebounds, and two assists. Sophomore Sadie Misner was the Skyhawks' third-leading scorer at five points to go along with four rebounds.

Sorenson and Misner controlled the scoring for the Skyhawks through the opening half of the first quarter to see Fort Lewis down 13-8. The Orediggers went on to score back-to-back threes to go along with a layup, extending the lead to 22-8 with 1:33 on the clock. Sorenson chipped in a late free throw as the quarter ended in favor of Mines, 24-9.

The Skyhawks picked up the first score of the second quarter thanks to Sorenson's ninth point of the evening to see things at 24-13. Turnovers plagued the Skyhawks on their following possessions as the Mines lead grew to 15 points with just over three minutes remaining in the half. Billy got Fort Lewis back on track with her first three of the night to send the teams into a media timeout with the score at 29-18. Freshman Audra Vine followed up the effort with a three of her own to pull the Skyhawks within eight points. The teams traded points to close out the half in a 32-22 score.

Mines opened the second half on a seven-point scoring surge before a jumper by Billy could slow the roll. The teams went scoreless over the following minutes before a pair of made free throws from Billy had the score at 39-26. The Orediggers began to create separation again, stifled briefly by a layup from Sorenson to see the score at 51-33 to end the third quarter.

The Orediggers extended the lead to 59-33 early in the fourth quarter in part to free throws and offensive rebounds before a driving layup from freshman Ruby Sweeney-Spitzeck had the score at 59-35. Freshman Kate Gallery ended another dry spell with her first three of the game, bringing the score to 62-38 with under four minutes to play. Both sides earned points via the free throw as the score drifted to 69-45 with under two minutes remaining. The Orediggers put an exclamation point on the win with a late three to end the game in a 74-45 final.

Fort Lewis (7-12, 4-9 RMAC) will lead to MSU Denver for a 3:30 p.m. tip-off tomorrow at the Auraria Event Center. Fort Lewis is 12-6 all-time against MSU Denver dating back to a series-opening win in 2007. Since then, the Skyhawks are 7-0 at home against the Roadrunners and 4-5 on the road. Fort Lewis fell on the road in the lone meeting last season, dropping the conference game by a 75-69 final on Jan. 7.
