Women's basketball remains home to host UCCS and Regis

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team will remain home this week to face UCCS and Regis University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Friday and Saturday.

Train Night and First Responders/Veterans Night
Friday's game will be the inaugural Train Night, sponsored by the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Fans will enjoy a game ball presentation as well as the chance to win a four-person Cascade Canyon Winter Package.


Saturday's contest will be First Responders and Veterans Night, and all first responders and veterans will receive free admission to the 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. doubleheader. Fort Lewis College athletics thanks those individuals for their time, dedication, and service.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks played in a lone Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup last Friday due to weather in the region. Saturday's game versus Black Hills State has been rescheduled for Monday, February 13th at 5:00 p.m.

In Friday's win over South Dakota Mines, Lanae Billy and very Evans led the team with career-highs at 24 and 15 points, respectively. Rounding out double-digit scorers for the Skyhawks was junior Kelsey Sorenson who put up 13 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

Lending to the team's win was a season-high field goal percentage of 50.9 (27-of-53) compared to a 40 percent (22-of-55) night for the Hardrockers. The field goal percentage with Fort Lewis' best since December 31, 2018 (59.1 percent vs. Northern New Mexico). Fort Lewis forced 21 turnovers on 15 steals—the third-best mark this season. The steals added up to 19 points off turnovers for the Skyhawks squad.

Scouting UCCS
The Mountain Lions sit 4-9 overall and 3-4 in league play after earning a mid-week win on Tuesday over Chadron State College (72-66). UCCS is 4-3 at home and 0-4 on the road this season. The team averages 62.9 points per game and 38.8 rebounds per game so far. They rank middle to low in the statistical rankings amongst RMAC teams with the exception of field goal defense where the team is top third.

Amyah Moore Allen leads all players with 15.8 points per game in her sophomore season. Maison White follows at 12.7 points per game on a team-best .553 field goal percentage. White is the leading rebounder at 8.5 per game—second in the RMAC. Sophie Abela has dished out 40 assists this season on just 18 turnovers for a 2.2 assist/turnover ratio, a mark that sits fifth in the conference.

Fort Lewis leads the all-time series at 13-9, including a 9-2 record inside of Whalen Gymnasium. Despite the mark, the Skyhawks have dropped three in a row to the Mountain Lions. In the lone meeting last year, Fort Lewis fell by a 55-52 final at home. Sorenson had 17 points and five rebounds in the loss.

Scouting Regis University
The Rangers are riding a three-game winning streak which has put them at 7-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Most recently, Regis earned a 74-63 win over Chadron State College in a rescheduled game this past Monday. Prior to that, the team picked up wins over Colorado Mesa (72-64) and Colorado Christian (91-84).

Regis is averaging 71.6 points per game while holding its opponents to a 67.5 points per game clip. Defensively, the team comes away with 42.2 rebounds per game with sit second in the RMAC. They lead all teams with a rebound margin of 6.8. The Rangers see offensive production from a variety of players, including four who average double digits. Erin Fry leads the way at 14.2 points per game, followed by Sam Deem (10.8 PPG), Josey Ryan (10.3 PPG), and Erin Stroberg (10.3 PPG). Stroberg and Deem are the leading rebounders at 7.4 and 7.4 per game, respectively.

Fort Lewis leads the all-time series at 14-10 with an 8-4 record at home. Last year, the Skyhawks lost a 78-77 game on the road and a 68-58 home contest to the Rangers. Alyssa Adams and Sorenson combined for 24 points in the one-point road loss.

Around the RMAC
Colorado School of Mines continues to lead the league with an unblemished 7-0 RMAC record to go along with an 11-1 overall mark. Adams State, CSU Pueblo, and Westminster follow at 5-2. From there, it is Black Hills State and Regis University with 4-2 marks. Fort Lewis sits in a tie for seventh at 3-3.

The Skyhawks rank fourth in the conference in team field goal percentage and team 3-point field goal percentage at .402 and .338.

In the national landscape, the RMAC is represented by Mines on the most recent D2SIDA top-25 poll at ninth. In the WBCA top-25 poll (voted on by coaches), Mines sits in 10th.

Inside the Numbers
Lanae Billy has been a highlight reel in her freshman campaign, leading the Skyhawks with 17.1 points per game. However, she wouldn't be able to find as much success if it weren't for the well-rounded performances from her counterparts. Kelsey Sorenson is averaging 12.8 points per game and a team-best 7.8 rebounds per game while turning in a pair of double-doubles this season. Sophomore Avery Evans has been a consistent presence on the court and is coming off a career-high 15 points in last week's win. Kaitlyn Bell's size and experience have been a welcome addition on a youthful roster, and she is coming away with 6.3 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game.

Fort Lewis will be on the road next week with games against Chadron State and Colorado Christian. The Skyhawks tip-off in Chadron, Nebraska on Friday at 5:30 p.m., followed by a Saturday matchup in Lakewood, Colorado at 5:00 p.m.
