Agbim, Mays lead No. 15/17 Skyhawks to commanding win over Rangers

DURANGO, Colo. – Obi Agbim scored 15 points and JaQuaylon Mays added 15 more as the No. 15/17 Fort Lewis College men's basketball team cruised past the Regis Rangers 75-62 for its third-straight win in a rocking Whalen Gymnasium on Saturday night.

Tonight's win is the third-straight for Fort Lewis (13-1, 6-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) and the sixth-straight win at home in Whalen Gymnasium where the Skyhawks remain unbeaten. FLC's 13-1 start to the season marks the best in program history through 14 games.

Regis now falls to 6-8 overall and 3-5 in RMAC play.

"It's just amazing, no matter how long you're coaching, you know I've been here a long time; all of these RMAC games are highly competitive," Fort Lewis College Head Coach Bob Pietrack said. "We've had a really even rivalry with them over the eight years I've been coaching, and coach Bergeson has been the same, it's been really even. Credit their program, they play hard, they're very physical, and they're a hard team to beat. I'm really happy with our guy's defensive intensity. To hold them to only 62 points, we really controlled the game defensively. I'm really proud of us, in both games this weekend, defensively we're getting better and that's a sign of a good team."

For the second-straight night, Fort Lewis allowed its foe to grab the upper hand at tipoff but retook control and never looked back. The Rangers jumped quickly jumped out to a minuscule 10-6 lead, it's last of the night, on a buried three-point jump shot from Aaron Bokol.

Minutes later Brenden Boatwright sank a pair of free throws and Dunnell Stafford took a trey of his own and suddenly the Skyhawks were back in front 11-10.

Fort Lewis controlled the pace from then on, forcing the Rangers on its heels and attacking the post while still finding chances from the perimeter. Junior Garbrah took advantage of a block by Brendan La Rose with just five seconds left, racing the length of the court for a driving layup and a 35-24 FLC lead at halftime.

It took just a minute and 27 seconds into the second half, and a free throw from Mays to bury the Rangers. The Skyhawks maintained its lead, stretching it to as many as 18 points, and held back the Rangers for a 75-62 victory.

After matching his career high in blocks with three last night, La Rose decided to one-up himself setting a new career-high in blocks with four tonight. Additionally, La Rose tallied eight rebounds, eight points, and one assist.

"I'll say this about [Brendan La Rose] with his career-high 28 minutes tonight," said Pietrack. "When you have a program you're getting all sorts of different types of high school, junior college, and Division I transfers the way the portal is right now. For a guy like La Rose that's been here for five years and getting an engineering degree, he's been a great leader. It hasn't always been sunshine and rainbows, he's had to work for it. He's really having a very nice senior year and I thought that was the best game he's played, and that's what seniors should be doing in a great program, leaving it all on the court."

Mays and Agbim led all scorers with 15 points each, while Mays provided an additional two rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block alongside Agbim's five rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block.

CJ Reed's 14 points led Regis' trio of double-digit scorers with Jasdeep Singh (12) and Aaron Bokol (11) close behind.

Fort Lewis dominated the Rangers starting five, holding them to a combined 26 points and forcing the remaining 36 points to come from off the bench. The Skyhawks also controlled the post all evening, outscoring Regis on points in the paint 42-26.
