Skyhawks women's basketball falls to Rangers in defensive dandy

DURANGO, Colo. – A defensive juggernaut went to the visiting Rangers in Saturday night women's basketball action between Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foes, Fort Lewis College and Regis University, by a final score of 60-50.

Fort Lewis dropped to 6-8 overall and 3-5 in league play while Regis lifted to 9-5, 6-2 RMAC.

"I thought that we had a great game plan, and it showed in the first half as we entered halftime with the lead," said head coach Taylor Harris. "Regis did a great job of going back to who they are as a team and making adjustments. I'm proud of our team for bouncing back from a hard-fought loss last night and competing hard tonight."

The Skyhawks were limited to a field goal percentage of 23.8 (15-of-63) for the contest—a season-low through 14 games. The Rangers ended things with a field goal percentage of 31.7 (20-of-63). Fort Lewis connected on five three-pointers versus four for Regis. Fort Lewis matched a season-high with 45 rebounds (17 offensive) compared to 50 for the Rangers.

Fort Lewis was led by junior Kelsey Sorenson and sophomore Avery Evans who each contributed 10 points. Sorenson was the leading rebounder at eight while graduate student Kaitlyn Bell came down with seven on the night. The Skyhawks had 13 players see the floor and were led in minutes by Evans at 32:42. Regis was led by an 18-point, 21-rebound effort from Erin Stroberg.

Shots were falling on both sides early in the contest as a made three off the hand of freshman Lanae Billy had the Skyhawks up 10-9 midway through the opening quarter. Regis rallied to pull ahead with a pair of made free throws, but Sorenson echoed the effort with two of her own to see a 13-12 score with 2:06 to go. The Rangers rallied late, ending the quarter on a 5-0 run to carry a 17-13 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter proved to be the team's most efficient of the night, and it was kicked off with a made three from Sorenson, just her second of the season, in the first minute of play. Ties and lead changes highlighted the middle portion of the quarter as a three-point play by Evans had Fort Lewis ahead 22-19. Billy added an exclamation point to the lead with her second three of the night, but the Rangers chipped away to make it a one-point game. Senior Alyssa Adams capped off the half with two from the stripe to give the Skyhawks a 29-26 edge at the break.

The teams made their way back onto the hardwood and opened the third by going scoreless through three minutes. Regis eventually broke the spell with a layup, and Sorenson followed it up with one of her own to get the teams on track. Tough defense continued to make things tough for both groups, but the Rangers were the first to find an answer with an 8-2 scoring run to claim a 38-35 lead with 1:08 to go. The visitors ended the quarter with a bucket in the point, and a six-point Skyhawks quarter had the lead in the hands of Regis, 40-35.

Regis continued to build on the advantage, grabbing a double-digit lead at 54-41 with 3:47 remaining in the contest. Sophomore Sadie Misner attempted to right the ship with a make from beyond the arc, followed by a corner three by Evans, but the Rangers continued to find an answer to hold the lead. Misner ended the quarter with two made free throws, but the buzzer sounded on a 60-50 Regis win inside of Whalen Gymnasium.

Fort Lewis (6-8, 3-5 RMAC) will be on the road next week with games against Chadron State College (2-12, 2-6 RMAC) and Colorado Christian University (6-8, 2-6 RMAC). The Skyhawks tip-off in Chadron, Nebraska on Friday at 5:30 p.m., followed by a Saturday matchup in Lakewood, Colorado at 5:00 p.m.

"When you get on the road, you can limit the distractions and focus on being together with the team. It's going to be a tough road trip, but we have a team that responds well to adverse situations, and I have a good feeling about next weekend," said Harris in closing.
