Women's soccer drops 2-0 match to No. 5 Mavericks

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team battled against its second nationally-ranked opponent in as many weeks, ultimately falling to No. 5 Colorado Mesa University in a 2-0 final from Dirks Field.

The Skyhawks move to 5-2-5 on the year and 1-2-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while the Mavericks improve to 10-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in league play.

Colorado Mesa ended the match with a 26-12 advantage in shots and a 13-3 edge in shot on goal. Senior goalkeeper Riley Bravin recorded a season-high seven saves while senior Katlyn Rosenbaum had four on the evening. Junior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein led the team with three shots while three different players sent a shot on goal. Senior Elizabeth David, junior Sabrina Reyes, and freshman Ann Spence played the full 90 minutes.

Colorado Mesa got things started immediately in the first half, sending its first shot on goal just 33 seconds into play. The trend continued through the opening 20 minutes of play with Bravin recording five of her seven saves. The Skyhawks had their first look of the match in the 35th minute when a corner from Reyes found senior Aubrey Swindle in the box. Swindle mustered a shot forward, but the ball ricochet off the woodwork to preserve the tie.

In the 38th minute, the Mavericks had another chance to go ahead with a hook shot from 22 yards out. Bravin correctly read the play and made a world-class save to hold it scoreless. It would take just three minutes for Colorado Mesa to earn another quality look, this one putting the visitors up 1-0. The Mavericks benefitted from a corner kick, playing the ball back about 30 yards. Colorado Mesa's Abby Fotheringham booted it forward to find the head of Tatum Pfalmer who directed it past Bravin. The Skyhawks picked up three shots down the stretch, but the Mavericks headed into the break with a 1-0 lead.

The Mavericks opened the second half and maintained possession through the opening 10 minutes. Rosenbaum, the new Fort Lewis keeper, made her first save of the half in the 54th minute with a diving effort on a ball from 25 yards out to hold the score. Freshman Amber Otts was credited with a shot on goal moments later, testing the keeper with a long shot on the far sideline, but the ball was collected to maintain the score.

On the following play, the Mavericks earned their second goal scoring opportunity when a Skyhawks defender fouled the visiting forward in the box. Mira Houck stepped in the take the penalty kick and drove the ball into the bottom left corner to double the advantage at 2-0. Fort Lewis didn't go away quietly, though, sending a handful of shots just high through the end of the match as time expired on a 2-0 match.
