Skyhawks women’s soccer surpasses 2022 win total in shutout of Yellow Jackets

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team improved to 7-2-5 on the year, surpassing the win total from last season with four regular season matches remaining on the schedule. Seven wins is the most by a Skyhawks squad since 2019.

The Skyhawks are now 3-2-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-9-2 overall and 1-6-2 in conference play.

"We are always happy to win on the road. This was a tougher game than the score leads you to believe," said head coach Damian Clarke. "Black Hills pressed us hard, and we struggled to get out of it as often as we would have liked."

The shutout will serve as a memorable one for sophomore Rozlin Gomez who connected on her first career goal to open the contest. Senior Elizabeth David scored her first goal of the season and was credited with an assist—her third of the year. Sophomore Josie Coulter picked up her second goal of the year in the win. Senior McKenna Ford and junior Danielle Gonzales each earned assists. Fort Lewis now has goals from 15 different players as well as eight players with at least one assist. Seniors Katlyn Rosenbaum and Riley Bravin combined for their seventh shutout of the year.

"Elizabeth was superb in her service from distance. A goal and an assist is a great day for any defender," recognized Clarke. "I want to acknowledge Danielle too—she played a great ball through to Josie for our second goal tonight."

Ford was credited with the first shot of the match in the second minute, followed by a near-miss by senior Aubrey Swindle who rattled one off the woodwork. The Skyhawks saw their opening in the 15th minute when David lined up a free kick from near the midfield line. The senior found Ford in the box who beat the diving keeper, directing the ball to the foot of Gomez who one-touched it into the back of the net. Swindle saw another chance moments later, beating a pair of defenders to find a one-on-one chance with the keeper. The Yellow Jackets keeper made a great move and earned her third save of the half.

It would take another 18 minutes for Fort Lewis to double the lead, this goal coming from Coulter. It began when Gonzales, playing in just her second match since returning from injury, served a cross into the box. Coulter was the first to the ball, using her head to beat the keeper and make it a 2-0 lead. Gonzales now has assists in both games played this season, bringing her career total to three.

In the second half, freshman Haley Stafford had a pair of great looks in the 58th and 62nd minutes. First, the opposing keeper made the save eight yards from the net. Stafford's next attempt forced the keeper to stretch above her head, but it resulted in another save for BHSU. The Skyhawks' third and final goal came in the 75th minute when David banked a free kick from nearly forty yards out.
