Skyhawks travel to Regional Pod to face UCCS and South Dakota Mines

DURANGO, Colo. – The road stretch continues for the Fort Lewis College volleyball team this week as the group is heading to another Regional Pod, this one on the campus of South Dakota Mines.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis was winless on the road last week against No. 12 Regis (0-3) and UCCS (2-3). In the match against Regis, the Skyhawks were limited to a .113 hitting efficiency compared to a .330 clip for the Rangers. Senior Lauren Shea led the team with eight kills, followed by senior Chay Swenson who contributed six. Sophomore Ella Butler led the team by hitting .333 with five kills. Junior Natalia Lambos dished out 27 assists to go along with seven digs. Junior Sarah Wilkey led the team with nine digs.

The following afternoon, the Skyhawks narrowly fell to UCCS in five sets. Fort Lewis held a slight advantage in hitting efficiency with a .219 mark compared to a .208 clip for UCCS. The Mountain Lions benefitted from 10 aces versus five for the Skyhawks. The teams combined for 165 digs. Sophomore Ella Butler led the team with 15 kills (.303) to go along with four blocks. Junior Alexis Hobie followed with a double-double, seeing 14 kills and a career-high 19 digs. Freshman Alina Nunez rounded out double-digit scorers with 11 digs while contributing eight digs. Junior Natalia Lambos dished out 45 assists to go along with a season-high six kills. Junior Sarah Wilkey ended the match with 19 digs to lead the team.

Scouting UCCS
The Mountain Lions are a familiar foe having just faced the Skyhawks last week. The Mountain Lions are 7-12 this season and 5-4 in RMAC play after winning both matches last week UCCS is hitting .171 this season compared to a .208 mark for their opponents. Lauryn Shockley leads the team with 2.54 kills per set, followed by three additional players who average better than two kills per set. The offense runs through Joei Barela and Maylen Mitrovich who have split time at setter. Defensively, Mackenzie Ransom leads the team by averaging 3.10 digs per set. Fort Lewis is 16-24 all-time against UCCS.

Scouting South Dakota Mines
The Hardrockers are 13-7 on the year and 7-3 in conference play after winning two matches last week. The team earned a 3-1 win over Western Colorado on Tuesday to get back on the winning trend. As a team, South Dakota Mines hits .208 compared to a .170 clip for their opponents. Alessandra Meoni is leading the team with 3.56 kills per set at a .312 hitting efficiency. Three players follow with at least two kills per set. Kiley Metzger has been the team's primary setter this season and averages 8.38 assists per set. Hannah Benes leads the team and the RMAC in services aces per set (.67) and has totaled 48 so far. She is also the top defensive player for the Hardrockers at 4.68 digs per set and has committed just 12 reception errors on 322 chances (.963).

Around the RMAC        
The conference has three teams ranked in the AVCA Division II Coaches Poll, released Monday. MSU Denver leads the way at No. 6 with a 14-3 record, followed by Colorado Mesa at No. 9 with an 18-1 record. Regis University dropped one spot to No. 12 with a 13-4 record.

Fort Lewis ranks fifth in the conference in opponent-hitting percentage (.184). Sophomore Ella Butler ranks second in the league with .53 aces per set. Junior Natalia Lambos is averaging 9.53 assists per set to rank fifth in the conference. Junior Alexis Hobie ranks sixth in the league at 3.19 kills per set. Junior Sarah Wilkey is seventh in the conference with 3.80 digs per set.

Inside the Numbers     
The Skyhawks average 12.2 kills per set and 11 assists per set this season. The team had a season-high hitting percentage of .348 in a win over Black Hills State. Boasting a deep lineup, Fort Lewis has eight players averaging at least one kill per set. Hobie is leading the way with 3.19 per set, followed by  JJCurry's 2.52. Lambos is averaging a career-best 9.53 assists per set to go along with 1.94 digs per set. Wilkey leads the way on defense with 3.80 digs per set. Butler leads the team with .93 blocks per set, followed by freshman Jordyn Romano's .73 per set average.

Up Next
Fort Lewis will be back home to begin November with matches against Adams State University and CSU Pueblo. The Skyhawks will take on the Grizzlies on Friday, November 3 at 6:00 p.m., followed by a Saturday match against the Thunderwolves at 3:00 p.m.
