Yellow Jackets run past Skyhawks 34-20

DURANGO, Colo. – Parker Cunningham and Kalib Davis each hauled in interceptions while Samuel Ballas forced a fumble and Braden Wingle threw for two touchdowns, but unable to convert on third down or slow down the opposition's running game, the Fort Lewis football team dropped a 34-20 decision to Black Hills State University Saturday afternoon up on the rim.

Black Hills State advances to 5-4 on the year and 4-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play as the Skyhawks remain winless this season.

"The guys battled today and did a good job of implementing some of our keys to victory that we focused on all week long," head coach Johnny Cox shared. "Within what we did get; how we competed and practiced through the week, our guys took pride in it. I feel like we can replicate our growth with how we practice, and the attention to detail, and if we get that ingrained into how we prepare I'm hoping that is how this program continues to compete."

Wingle rifled off 271 yards this afternoon on 23 completions in 38 attempts (60.5%) and linked up with Peyton Monson and Zachary Gaumont for a pair of touchdowns. Now at 3,390 career passing yards, Wingle has etched himself as tenth all-time in program history. Gaumont hauled in all 75 of his yards on a single reception while Monson totaled 76 yards on five receptions.

Facing a daunting Yellow Jackets defense, the Skyhawks' offensive line stood tall to only allow 2.0 tackles for a combined seven yards of loss and no sacks. Additionally, FLC did not lose a single yard across all 26 rushing attempts on the afternoon. Croix Burney was the lead back with 47 yards on eight carries.

Black Hills State dominated the running game with 344 yards from scrimmage on 42 total carries. Nolan Susel carried his weight with 173 yards and three touchdowns on 15 attempts. Yellow Jackets Quarterback Tanner Clarkson found 150 yards and one touchdown on his seven completions alongside FLC's two takeaways.

Fort Lewis, although 4-for-6 on fourth down and 2-for-2 in the red zone, only converted on two of 15 third downs. Hunter Villavicencio drilled a pair of 30 and 34-yard field goals in the first and third quarters. The Skyhawks racked up 369 yards of total offense, surpassing 300 yards for the sixth game this season, but could not slow down the Yellow Jackets offense which went off for 524 yards despite three turnovers.

Notables
-Wingle now stands tenth in Fort Lewis' all-time career passing yards list with 3,390.
-Cunningham and Davis combined for the Skyhawks' first two-interception game since Clayton Rutz and Jalani Blade hauled in a pair at Chadron State back on Oct. 23, 2021.
-Ballas' forced fumble is the fourth by a Skyhawk this season. Jack Hanenburg made the recovery, also the fourth by a Skyhawk this year.
