Skyhawks caged by No. 15/17 Mountaineers on the road

GUNNISON, Colo. – The Fort Lewis football team dropped its final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road test of the season 57-3 at fifteenth-ranked Western Colorado University Saturday afternoon on Katy O. Rady Field. The Skyhawks fall to 0-10 overall and 0-8 in RMAC play while the Mountaineers advance to 9-1 and 7-1 in conference play.

"Western's a great team. They're nationally ranked and only lost their first game of the season last week," head coach Johnny Cox shared. "We had a good, tough week of practice… the defense was making some stops, and the offense wasn't moving the ball, we just weren't playing to the best of our ability today."
 
The Skyhawks marched downfield on the opening drive before Western Colorado's defense finally forced a stop just inside Mountaineers territory. Drake Cortez took the snap from the Mountaineer's 43-yard line and Hunter Villavicenio drilled the career-long 53-yard field goal through the uprights for the game's opening score.
 
From then on, the Mountaineers' top-ranked defense began to show its colors as they held Fort Lewis to 185 total yards and scoreless through the remainder of the game. While Western Colorado was unable to force a turnover, WCU tallied six sacks on the afternoon for 48 total yards while holding FLC to 3-for-16 on third downs.
 
Braden Wingle finished his afternoon 11-for-28 (39.3%) for 94 yards while Sam Jones completed both of his passing attempts for another 25 yards. Running back Cameron Mack rushed for 80 net yards on 17 total attempts and Croix Burney another 25 yards on five attempts but the Mountaineers' sack count brought Fort Lewis' total rushing yards to just 66.
 
Drew Nash rifled off 244 yards and two touchdowns on 13 completions for the Mountaineers while Braeden Hogan provided another two touchdowns on the ground with 137 rushing yards in his pocket. Deyvon Butler went off for 240 yards and one touchdown on the ground while Kaiden Hernandez, Christien Manning, Victory David, and Sage Yazzie each recorded a trip to the end zone as well.
 
Notables
-Villavicencio's 53-yard field goal is the longest of his career and the longest by a Skyhawks since 2013 when full-season statistics were last verifiable.
-Wingle's 3,484 career yards now ranks 9th all-time in the Fort Lewis record book.
-The Skyhawks have not lost a turnover in the last two games.
 
Up Next
Fort Lewis is slated to host first-ranked Colorado School of Mines (10-0, 8-0 RMAC) next Saturday for Senior Day and Veterans and First Responders Day. Kick-off is scheduled for noon on Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
