Skyhawks face tough road test against #16 Orediggers and (RV) Mountain Lions

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team faces a tough test on the road this week, traveling with an unbeaten record to face No. 16 Colorado School of Mines and (RV) UCCS for a pair of conference clashes.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis improved to 5-0-4 after a win and tie at home last week. The win came in 6-0 fashion over New Mexico Highlands in a match that had six different players scoring goals. It was the most goals scored in a contest since 2016, and Fort Lewis outshot New Mexico Highlands by a 33-2 margin, including a 16-1 advantage in shots on goal. The shots total was the most by a Skyhawks squad since 2016 while the shots on goal mark stands as the most since at least 2013. It was also the team's fourth shutout of the year.

Three freshmen netted goals, including Haley Stafford, Ashlyn Salas, and Ann Spence. It was Stafford and Spence's first career goals. Stafford also earned an assist in the win—her third of the season. Senior Aubrey Swindle scored her team-leading third goal of the year while junior Anika Scherer was credited with her second of the season. Senior Julia Johnson rounded out goal scorers for Fort Lewis with her first of the season. Junior Sabrina Reyes picked up her second assist of the season in the win. Seniors Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for the shutout.

On Sunday, Fort Lewis played to a scoreless draw against Adams State. Fort Lewis had a 19-9 edge in shots for the match and a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Skyhawks also recorded six corners versus two for the Grizzlies. The defensive trio of freshman Amber Otts, sophomore Rachel Peebles, and senior Elizabeth David each played the full 90 minutes and led the team to its fifth shutout of the season.

Senior Aubrey Swindle led the team with five shots on goal, followed by four players who had one. Freshman Jenna Salazar and junior Sabrina Reyes each tallied three shots for the match. Seniors Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for the shutout, and Rosenbaum earned both saves for the Skyhawks. The opposing keeper earned nine saves on the day.

Scouting #16 Colorado School of Mines
Mines sits at 6-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in league play after winning both matches last week. First, the Orediggers topped Black Hills State (8-0) before taking down Regis (3-1) to end the weekend. Mines ranks second in the RMAC in goals per game at 2.90 and allows just .80 goals per game from their opponents. The team has dished out 28 assists compared to six for the opposition.

Reese McDermott, reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, leads the team with seven goals and three assists on the year. She is backed up by Bella Campos who has six goals and three assists to her credit. Three additional players have at least two goals, followed by eight who own one goal this season. Sadie Wolf has started seven matches between the pipes and boasts a .92 goals-against average with 15 saves.

Fort Lewis is 7-18-2 all-time against Mines, dropping last season's meeting by a 3-1 final on the road. Sabrina Reyes accounted for the team's goal in the loss. Katlyn Rosenbaum played the full 90 at goalkeeper and made six saves along the way.

Scouting (RV) UCCS
UCCS is 6-2-2 this year with a 4-0 mark in conference play. The Mountain Lions earned a pair of 1-0 wins over Colorado Christian and MSU Denver last week on the road. UCCS ranks third in the conference in goals allowed at .70 per game. The team averages 1.60 goals per game and 12.1 shots per game.

Ciara Garcia leads the team with three goals and an assist, followed by Emily Aguilar who has three goals. The duo of Makayla Merlo and Sydney Lasater each have two goals. Fie Steenberg is tied for the team lead with three assists, followed by two players who boast a pair. Isabella Whitmore has started all 10 matches at goalkeeper, allowing seven goals for a .71 goals-against average to go along with 34 saves.

Fort Lewis is 15-8 all-time against UCCS, falling in the RMAC Tournament Quarterfinal in a 2-1 heartbreaker last season. Hannah Paschke scored for the Skyhawks to tie the game in the 86th minute, but the Mountain Lions netted the game-winner with just four seconds remaining to advance to the semifinal round.

Around the RMAC
The league is represented on the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll by Colorado Mesa which sits at No. 4 with an 8-0-0 record. Mines dropped from moved up four spots to No. 16 following an undefeated weekend at home. In the South Central Region, Colorado Mesa and Mines are first and second, respectively, followed by UCCS (4th), Regis (5th), Westminster (8th), and Fort Lewis (10th).

Mesa leads the conference in goals per game (3.375) and goals allowed per game (.25). Fort Lewis ranks second in goals allowed per game (.44). Three played have seven goals this season to lead the conference, followed by Bella Campos who has six. Swindle is tied for second in the league with three game-winning goals.

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis is off to its best start since 2011 with a 5-0-4 record, averaging 1.89 goals per game compared to a mark of less than one goal per game last season. Fort Lewis is one win away from matching last year's win total with nine regular season matches remaining on the schedule and has already surpassed last year's goals total (16) with 17 thus far. The Skyhawks are also holding their opponents to an impressive average of .44 goals per game. 13 players have scored goals this season, led by Swindle who has three. Haley Stafford and Swindle lead the season with three assists each, followed by Elizabeth David and Sabrina Reyes who have a pair. Katlyn Rosenbaum and Bravin have split time at goalkeeper and combine for a .44 goals-against average. Bravin has faced 35 shots and owns a 4-0-2 record.

Fort Lewis will be back home next week for Homecoming, first welcoming No. 4 Colorado Mesa University for a Friday match which is set to kick off at 4:30 p.m. from Dirks Field. The team wraps up the homestand on Sunday at noon against Westminster University.
