Cross country travels to compete in loaded Lewis Crossover Invitational

10/6/2023 8:28:00 AM

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's and women's cross country teams face a loaded field this weekend, toeing the line at the prestigious Lewis Crossover Invitational in Romeoville, Illinois.

Scouting the Competition
The Invitational is fielding teams from 34 schools across 13 states. There are nine nationally ranked or receiving votes programs on the men's side and 10 on the women's side. Six additional programs on both sides are ranked regionally. Six of the eight regions will be represented on Saturday, and the race should have big implications when it comes to at-large bids for the NCAA's.

About the Course
According to the staff at Lewis University, the course has been dry and fast. Rainfall was projected this week, so there is a chance of slightly different course conditions. The women's 6k consists of two full loops of the course, while the men's 8k will be two full loops and a portion that juts out before a straightaway finish. The course map can be found HERE.

Follow Along
The Invitational will feature live results, live splits, and live video on the GLVC Network. Times and live results will be provided by Bob Geiger at www.ILpreptoptiming.com.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis sent a group to the Gig Leadbetter Maverick Invite last week in Grand Junction, coming away with a slew of personal bests and a perfect score on the women's side. Senior Peyton Burnside was the top finished in the women's 5k, running for a personal best with a time of 19:36.2 in the 5k. In the men's 8k, it was freshman Malakai Hanson who led the charge for Fort Lewis with a personal best time of 25:12.3 to place seventh.

Around the South Central Region
The men's team owns a ninth-place ranking in the South Central Region and will look to build on the already promising season this week. The RMAC is well-represented on the men's side with Colorado School of Mines sitting in first, followed by Adams State in second place. Colorado Christian is third in the region, followed by Western Colorado and UCCS. CSU Pueblo and New Mexico Highlands are seventh and eighth, respectively.

The women's team is also sitting in ninth place in the region after a strong outing several weeks ago with their core group of athletes. Adams State ranks first in the region, followed by Colorado School of Mines. Western is the third-ranked team in the region. UCCS and CSU Pueblo sit in fourth and fifth while Colorado Christian owns the sixth-place ranking.

RMAC Championship on Deck
The team will have two weeks to prepare for this year's RMAC Championships, hosted by MSU Denver at Washington Park. It is a familiar course for the Skyhawks as the team competed in both the MSU Denver Roadrunner Invite and the NCAA South Central Regional at the same location in 2022.

At last year's RMAC Championships, Fort Lewis was fortunate enough to host the field at Hillcrest Golf Course for the first time in program history. The men's team placed eighth while the women's placed seventh. Katie Heck earned First Team All-Conference accolades with a 13th-place finish.
