Defense shines as No. 15 Skyhawks subdue Mustangs in 2023-24 home opener

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis men's basketball forced 23 turnovers and blocked nine shots, the eighth-most in a single game in program history, led by Junior Garbrah and Brayden Carter with three each as the 15th-ranked Skyhawks defense stymied Western New Mexico University in an 87-68 victory on the opening night of basketball back in Whalen Gymnasium.

The Skyhawks move to 2-1 on the season while Western New Mexico remains winless at 0-3.

Obi Agbim led the way with 18 points and Carter another 12 as the Skyhawks capped off the night by shooting 50.8 percent from the field and converting on 20 of 25 field goal attempts. Two Mustangs finished with double figures: Evan Butts with a 15-point outing and Allen Fordham with a 13-point and team-leading eight-rebound performance. Additionally, FLC held the Mustangs to 36.2 percent shooting across the night and only four fast-break points and one point off of a turnover.

Isaiah Thompson drained the opening bucket with a mid-range jump shot, and Fort Lewis never looked back. The Skyhawks stretched its first-half lead to as many as 15 points after Agbim sank six consecutive free-throws. WNMU hung tough, however, pulling within four near the end of the half before Agbim sank another pair of free-throws heading into the locker room.

A 15-minute intermission wasn't enough for Western New Mexico to recharge as Fort Lewis raced out of the locker room in stride to reclaim the double-digit lead on a thunderous dunk from Carter. Samier Kinsler captured the largest lead of the night at 22 points with a deep three-pointer as the Mustangs could only drop in nine more field goals through the second half.

Agbim set a career-high with five steals tonight while Sekou Dembele led FLC with eight rebounds.
