8th-seeded Skyhawks stun 9th-seeded Mountain Lions with breathtaking three-goal comeback in opening round of the NCAA Tournament

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – It was 2-0 with all momentum in favor of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (10-6-5) until Fort Lewis (12-4-4) found another gear and shocked the crowd at Stang Park Friday afternoon.

The Skyhawks men's soccer team, scoreless with 35 minutes left in the match, scored three unanswered goals to overcome the Mountain Lions and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 2:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time against first-seeded Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Although conceding a pair of goals, freshman goalkeeper Lucas Martin may have saved Fort Lewis' season. UCCS, leading 1-0 two minutes into the second half, drew a foul in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Second-Team All-RMAC selection Kolby Raineri lined it up, and Martin met the ball at the right post to save the score.

UCCS captured its lead after scoring the opening goal in the 40th minute of the first half off the foot of Raineri. Alex Andersson added the second goal shortly into the second half.

It all began when in the 55th minute, a pair of touch-passes from Anton Hjalmarsson and Thomas Kirkham met the foot of Tomas Duenes for the goal. Just under ten minutes later, Kirkham – with service from Hjalmarsson – found just enough space in the penalty box to strike the back-right corner of the net.

Facing the possibility of overtime, Fort Lewis' relentless pursuit finally broke through a third time in the 86th minute. Hjalmarsson, just outside of the Mountain Lions' penalty box, pulled away four defenders before sending his service pass left to a wide-open Gabriel Legendre. Legendre, a four-year veteran making his first NCAA Tournament appearance, would not be denied as he punched it past the keeper to all but assure the Skyhawks' appearance in Sunday's second-round matchup.

While three different Skyhawks tallied goals in the match, it was Hjalmarsson who secured all three assists in addition to Kirkham's one. Martin tallied two saves in the contest.

FLC will now take on Super Region 4's top overall seed in Midwestern State on the Mustangs' home pitch. MSU racked up a 19-0-1 record, appeared at number two on the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, and dominated Dallas Baptist University (6-8-6) 5-0 in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship. The match will be streamed live for free on the Lone Star Conference Network.
