Bevington's big night leads Fort Lewis women's basketball to first win

DURANGO, Colo. – Guided by an explosive fourth quarter and a double-double from junior Sydney Bevington, the Skyhawks women's basketball team earned their first win of the season in 58-39 fashion over Northern New Mexico.

Fort Lewis shot 29.9 percent (20-of-67) from the field and 28.1 percent (9-of-32) from three. The biggest difference maker in the win came on defense where the Skyhawks came away with 51 rebounds—most in a game since the 2021-22 season. The Eagles recorded 39 rebounds and connected on just two three-pointers.

Bevington was a key piece of the defensive scheme and led the team with 18 rebounds—most for a Skyhawks player since at least 2012. The junior added 12 points and three to her stat line. Sophomore Kate Gallery led all players with a career-high 14 points to go along with six rebounds. Junior Samantha Wattawa continued her impressive campaign with a career-best eight rebounds to bring her season average to 6.8. Junior Sadie Misner added six steals and three assists in the win.

In the first quarter, the teams saw tied scores through the opening six minutes of play. The Eagles found a lead thanks to opportunities from the charity stripe, but junior Avery Evans responded with a layup to knot it up again. Evans gave her team a 12-10 lead moments later after collecting a rebound and converting on a layup. Northern New Mexico managed to tie it with a jumper, and the 12-12 score would carry into the second quarter.

Wattawa got the Skyhawks off to a good start in the second quarter with an early jumper to reclaim a lead. Bevington would extend the lead at the 7:52 mark with her own jumper, and the lead would hold until midway through the quarter. The Eagles would score four points to tie it at 18-all, but Gallery put an eventual end to the deadlock with a three-pointer. The final point of the half would come with 90 seconds remaining off a Fort Lewis free throw, and the home team held a 22-18 edge heading into the break.

The Eagles went to work in the third quarter, trimming the Skyhawks' lead to one point with an early layup. Evans connected on another layup at the six-minute mark to make it 25-22, and Bevington followed that up one minute later for a five-point lead. Northern New Mexico came back to life late in the quarter and made it a one-point game with under two minutes to go. Bevington scored from the free throw line, and junior Luisa Chavez dialed in a three-pointer as the quarter ended in a 36-29 score.

What would ultimately be the Skyhawks' most efficient quarter began with a three from sophomore Lanae Billy. Billy would do it again, this time off an assist from Evans, to make it 44-33 with 6:12 on the clock. The threes continued to pour in for Fort Lewis with buckets from senior Ember Cervantes and Gallery extending the lead to 53-36. The Eagles converted on one of their own down the stretch, but Billy capped off the evening with a jumper to end the contest in a 58-39 final.
