No. 20 Skyhawks survive second-half struggles, down Eagles 75-62

DURANGO, Colo. – Despite 14 turnovers accompanied by 31 percent shooting from the field in the second half, a dominant 51-point opening half proved the key to victory as the 20th-ranked Fort Lewis men's basketball team clung to its early lead to outlast Northern New Mexico College 75-62 inside Whalen Gymnasium to advance to 4-1 on the season ahead of conference play.

Northern New Mexico picked up its seventh loss of the season.

"Happy with the first half, thought our energy was excellent, got control of the game, and just grossly disappointed with the second half on all levels," head coach Bob Pietrack shared following the victory. "I thought we had good ball movement in the first half, we were ready for it. We played inside-out, shot 50 percent, and the second half was just a very poor half. We're going to have to play a much better game than we did tonight to have success on the road in the RMAC this week."

Fort Lewis torched Northern New Mexico in the first half as the Skyhawks shot 50 percent from the field while knocking down five three-pointers and forcing 12 of NNMC's 21 total turnovers.

Running its traditional "no-starters" lineup coined by Pietrack, the Skyhawks bench outscored the Eagles' bench by a commanding 43-to-10 difference. In addition, FLC now moves to 3-0 this season when out-rebounding opponents following a 44-31 margin over NNMC.

Brayden Carter led all players on the night with 12 rebounds while Northern New Mexico's Malek Malual led all scorers with a 20-point, five-rebound, and two-assist performance.

Four Skyhawks finished in double figures led by Obi Agbim with 15 points and three steals while Samier Kinsler and Amondo Miller Jr. each added 11 more, their first double-digit performances of the season and a career-high for Miller Jr., and Tristan Hurdle provided another ten.

Despite turnovers and inefficient shooting, the Skyhawks still held Northern New Mexico to 36 points in the second half: the fifth-most points allowed by FLC in a half this season. The Eagles tallied 20 of its second-half points in the paint while sinking three treys and a trio of free throws.
