Skyhawks travel to Gunnison for high altitude matchup at No. 15/17 Mountaineers

11/3/2023 6:00:00 AM

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College football team (0-9, 0-7 RMAC) is off on its final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road trip of the season as the Skyhawks take on 15th-ranked Western Colorado University (8-1, 6-1 RMAC) Saturday afternoon on Katy O. Rady Field.

Kick-off with the Mountaineers is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. With ongoing construction at the Mountaineer Bowl, all football games are being played on Katy O. Rady Field. Due to the facilities' limited capacity, WCU has ensured 100 tickets for Skyhawks fans planning to make the trip to Gunnison, Colo. Fans looking to purchase said tickets will need to use the passcode "FLC2023" on the Mountaineers ticketing site.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis played host to Black Hills State University (5-4, 4-3 RMAC) last weekend and the Yellow Jackets emerged victorious by a 34-20 score. The Skyhawks forced three takeaways in the contest, two of which came from interceptions by Parker Cunningham and Kalib Davis but could not convert on third down to keep pace. Braden Wingle connected for a pair of touchdowns with Peyton Monson and Zachary Gaumont, but BHSU's 344 rushing yards provided four touchdowns for the opposition.

Numbers to Know
Wingle, who recently etched himself as the 11th player in program history to eclipse 3,000 or more career-passing yards, currently owns 3,390 career yards and sits 58 yards shy of 2,000 for the year. Additionally, Wingle trails Jordan Doyle's (2013-15) seventh all-time mark by only 345 yards. Monson and Gaumont hauled in their third touchdowns each last week, but still trail Christopher Thomas Jr. who leads the roster with four.

Scouting the No. 15/17 Mountaineers
Western Colorado, previously unbeaten, was knocked off by first-ranked Colorado School of Mines (9-0, 7-0 RMAC) last week in a blizzardy Golden, Colo. The Mountaineers produced only 142 total yards in the contest, 135 of which came from the passing game as running back and conference rushing touchdown leader Deyvon Butler found only 15 net yards in the game. WCU's biggest threat, however, is its defense that ranks second in the conference in points allowed per game (17.0), yards allowed per game (273.3), rushing yards allowed per game (102.7), and leads the league in passing yards per game allowed (170.7), interceptions (11), and owns the third-most sacks.

Final Game on Deck
Next Saturday, Nov. 11, Fort Lewis will host number-one-overall Mines for its final game of the season and senior day. The game is slated for a noon start time with senior day festivities taking place before kickoff.
