2023 Football season comes to a close in Durango

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College football program dropped its final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game of the year to the rolling and top-ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers by a score of 82-0 on Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
 
Fort Lewis finishes the season with an 0-11 overall record and a 0-9 conference mark while Mines completes its undefeated RMAC Regular Season Championship at 11-0 and 9-0 in conference games. Nine Skyhawks played in their final games donning the blue and gold including Drake CortezWill EoffBraden WinglePeyton MonsonKoloa HeatherClayton SimpsonTristen WilliamsBrayden Miller, and Julio Romo.
 
"Number one opponent in the nation, you can see why they're really good," head coach Johnny Cox shared. "I thought there were moments that are encouraging and hopefully they inspire these kids to take the next step. If we can tap into what it takes to be a successful team, by their example, I think we can really grow. I know a bunch of guys were already talking about how they're going to lift already, that's exactly what we need as a program: a bunch of guys focused on trying to win games in the RMAC."
 
Mines' John Matocha made history this afternoon as he threw for 264 yards and three touchdowns on only 13 completions. On the ground, Matocha added another 28 yards and a rushing touchdown. With his 55-yard touchdown pass to Flynn Schiele, Matocha surpassed Houston's Case Keenum and Central Iowa's Blaine Hawkins for the most touchdowns produced in college football history.
 
The Orediggers dished out 798 yards of total offense on the afternoon on the back of 508 rushing yards, primarily from Noah Roper who rushed for 129 and a score while Landon Walker added another 97 yards and three touchdowns alongside Chris Yoo with 95 yards and two touchdowns.
 
Wingle fired off 240 yards on 22 completions on the afternoon to move into eighth in all-time career passing yards at Fort Lewis with 3,724. Wingle also finishes second all-time in completion percentage (59.5) behind only Matt Guttierez' (2003-06) mark of 63.5 percent.
 
Parker Cunningham led the Skyhawks defense with a career-high 11 total tackles and his third double-digit tackle performance of the season. David Camara blocked a point-after-attempt from Mines' Hunter Pearson in the second quarter to snap Pearson's 73-for-73 season leading up to the block.
 
Notables
-Wingle concludes his Fort Lewis career among a plethora of top-ten lists in the Skyhawks program record book including first in average yards per pass (9.7), second in career completion percentage (59.5%), sixth in career completions (384), and seventh in career passing attempts (645).
-Fort Lewis is now 27-34 all-time against Colorado School of Mines.
-The Skyhawks finish the 2023 season with the most points scored since 2018 (146) while posting six games with 300 or more yards of total offense for the first time since 2016.
 
National Signing Day
The Skyhawks now turn their attention towards National Signing Day and spring football. Midyear signings are slated for Dec. 20, 2023, through Jan. 15, 2024, while the traditional signing period is set to open on Feb. 7, 2024.
