Women's soccer falls to No. 7-ranked Orediggers in RMAC Quarterfinal

GOLDEN, Colo. – The No. 7-seeded Fort Lewis College women's soccer team fell to No. 2-seeded Colorado School of Mines in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal, closing out the 2023 campaign with a 9-4-6 record—the most wins for a Skyhawks squad since 2015.

Mines, the No. 7-ranked team in NCAA Division II, improved to 14-2-3 on the year and advances to the semifinal round where they will take on No. 3-seeded Regis University.

The Orediggers held a 19-13 advantage in shots for the match, including an 11-1 edge in shots on goal. The teams combined for five corners and eight fouls. Sophomore Anna Tucker was credited with the lone shot on goal for Fort Lewis while five players tallied a pair of shots. Senior goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for seven saves in the effort.

Fort Lewis played the possession game early in the first half, tactically controlling the ball in their defensive third. The team saw its first offensive look three minutes into play when junior Sabrina Reyes played it ahead to senior Aubrey Swindle. Swindle took on a pair of defenders just outside the box, and her shot was ultimately blocked to hold it scoreless. The Skyhawks continued to dominate possession through to opening 12 minutes, playing it forward on occasion to test the opposing defense.

The Orediggers saw a scoring opportunity in the 13th minute when a well-placed cross found a leaping Mines player in front of Bravin in goal. Reese McDermott, the 2023 RMAC Player of the Year, was bested by freshman Amber Otts who clipped the ball for an easy Bravin save. Freshman Abila Tapia responded with a deep shot on the far side of the field, but her right-footed blast deflected off the crossbar to preserve the tie. McDermott had another prime opportunity in the 17th minutes when she beat her defender on the right side of goal, but sophomore Rachel Peebles won the ball and played it forward to the midfield.

As Mines began to get into an offensive groove, Bravin went to work proving why she's one of the league's top goalkeepers. The senior recorded another save in the 24th minute after correctly reading an attempted back-heel shot that was headed for the bottom, left pocket. A cross into the box finally broke through for the Orediggers as a header from RMAC Freshman of the Year, Bella Campos, found the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage with 15 minutes remaining in the half. Campos doubled the lead in the 34th minute when an unfortunate turnover in the defensive third left Bravin one-on-one with the Oredigger's leading goal scorer. Despite a late shot by Fort Lewis, the half ended in a 2-0 score.

In the second half, Rosenbaum was immediately tested with a shot on goal in the 48th minute. The senior keeper used her length to get a hand on the ball for her first save of the match. She was immediately under pressure moments later with a shot deflecting off the crossbar. She navigated her way through traffic to punch the ball out and hold the score at 2-0.

The Orediggers continued to press the Skyhawks' defense and eventually found their third goal of the match, again off the foot of Campos. In the 75th minute, the freshman used her head on a cross to punch one into the left pocket of the goal to make it 3-0. Junior Danielle Gonzales and Swindle recorded the final shots for Fort Lewis, and Rosenbaum turned away one final attempt in the 83rd as time expired on a 3-0 final.

"We had a great start to the game and just didn't find a way to respond after giving up the first goal," said head coach Damian Clarke. "We are disappointed with the result but pleased with the growth of the team this season. Although it's the same result as 2022, the fact that the season lost just four games is a huge step forward, and we are excited for our future."
