Women’s basketball heads into RMAC play, takes on Mountaineers and Grizzlies

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on the road this Saturday against Western Colorado University before returning to Whalen Gymnasium for a Tuesday showdown versus Adams State University.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks are coming off a pair of dominant home wins against Lincoln University this week, outscoring the Oaks by a combined 75 points along the way. In Monday's 84-40 win, Fort Lewis saw double-digit points from five players. The Skyhawks complimented their diverse offense with smothering defense, forcing 34 turnovers and scoring nearly half of their points via the turnover. The Oaks were limited to shooting 30.4 percent (14-of-46) for the contest. Fort Lewis shot 34.5 percent (29-of-84) from the field and connected on a season-best 13 three-pointers.

In Tuesday's meeting, Fort Lewis shot a season-high 42 percent (29-of-69) from the field compared to a 27 percent (17-of-63) mark for Lincoln. The Skyhawks benefited from 19 assists which marks the most by a Fort Lewis squad since the 2019-20 season. In addition, the team saw 33 points from the bench and 21 points off of turnovers.

Scouting Western Colorado University
The Mountaineers are 2-3 this season with wins over Eastern New Mexico (64-58) and Northern New Mexico (63-50). As a team, Western Colorado is averaging 56.5 points per game while allowing 65.5 for their opponents. The Mountaineers average nearly eight three-pointers per game and 36 rebounds per game. They are led by Rachel Cockman who is averaging 19.3 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game—marks that rank first and third in the conference, respectively. Jayda Maves follows with 10 points per game.

In the series history, Fort Lewis leads 20-7 with an 11-3 mark in Gunnison. The Skyhawks won both matchups last season, first with a 64-57 victory at home before earning the sweep in 69-53 fashion. In the home win, Billy and Sorenson combined for 42 points and 14 rebounds. The road win featured a 21-point night from Sorenson and 13 points from Billy.

Scouting Adams State University
The Grizzlies are 5-3 this season and are coming off a pair of wins against Alaska Anchorage (83-82 and 66-65). As a team, Adams State is averaging 72.5 points per game compared to 69.5 for their opponents. They are shooting .427 percent from the field to rank fourth in the conference. Harmanie Dominguez leads the team by averaging 15.5 points per game, followed by Angelline Nageak at 13 per game. Nageak is tied for the conference lead with 3.3 steals per game. The leading rebounder is Riahana Davis at six per game.

In the series history, Fort Lewis leads 20-9 with a 12-3 record at home. Despite owning the overall record, the Skyhawks have dropped four in a row to a surging Grizzlies program. Last season, Fort Lewis fell 88-55 on the road and 76-71 at home.

Around the RMAC
Colorado Mesa leads the league with a 6-1 record, followed by Mines and Regis who are each 5-1. In the statistical standings, Fort Lewis ranks eighth in points per game (66.3), seventh in 3-point FGs made (6.8), sixth in free throw percentage (75.7), first in rebounds (41.3), first in steals per game (16.3), and first in offensive rebounds per game (15.8).

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis is led by senior Kelsey Sorenson who is averaging 15.7 points per game, followed by sophomore Lanae Billy who is putting up 12.2 per game. From there, five players average over five points per game. Junior Sydney Bevington leads the team with 9.4 rebounds per game—a mark that ranks sixth in the conference. Redshirt junior Lilly Pepper follows by averaging 6.8 rebounds per game and is coming off a pair of double-doubles. Billy leads the team and the conference with a 3.3 steals per game average, and junior Sadie Misner is close behind with 2.8 per game (4th in RMAC).
