Women’s basketball to close out the year with home game versus Westminster

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team will host Westminster University on Saturday afternoon to wrap up the 2023 portion of its schedule.

Last Time Out
Last week was one of the most successful weeks for the Skyhawks since head coach Taylor Harris took the reins. The team capped it off with a pair of wins over New Mexico Highlands (64-57) and CSU Pueblo (65-59) to improve to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

In the win over New Mexico Highlands, Fort Lewis shot 38.2 percent (22-of-51) from the field compared to a 35.6 percent (21-of-59) mark for New Mexico Highlands. The Skyhawks got to the free throw line 23 times in the contest, their sixth 20+ attempt game of the season, and converted 15 chances. The team was nine of ten in the final quarter to solidify the win.

In the key win over CSU Pueblo, the Skyhawks held the Pack to shooting 32.7 percent (17-of-52) from the field and 16 percent (4-of-25) from three. Fort Lewis shot 39.7 percent (23-of-58) from the field and 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from three. The Skyhawks stepped up defensively and forced 26 turnovers while committing just eight to mark a season low.

Scouting Westminster
The Griffins are 2-6 on the year and 0-4 in conference play. Westminster is in the midst of a four-game losing streak, including losses to Regis (76-59) and UCCS (75-51) last week. The team's wins have come against Alaska Fairbanks in mid-November.

Westminster is averaging 54.8 points per game compared to 66.4 per game from their opponents. They hold an advantage in rebounding with an average of 36.3 per game but commit 19.3 turnovers per game—five more than their opponents. Teuila Nawahine leads the team by averaging 13.8 points per game, followed by Jaycee Lichtie who averages 9.1. Maunayia Harrigfeld leads the way with 8.9 rebounds per game.

Fort Lewis leads the series history with a 9-6 overall record and has won the last two matchups. The Skyhawks earned a 63-62 road win and a 57-53 home win over the Griffins last season.

Around the RMAC
Mines leads the conference ranks with a 9-1 overall record and a 4-0 mark in league play, followed by Adams State (7-3, 4-0). Four programs, including Fort Lewis, boast 3-1 records in conference action. In the statistical standings, Fort Lewis ranks seventh in points per game (65.1), seventh in 3-point FGs made (6.4), sixth in free throw percentage (73.9), second in scoring defense (57.8), second in offensive rebounds per game (12.0), and first in steals per game (14.0).

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis is led by senior Kelsey Sorenson who is averaging 14.0 points per game, followed by sophomore Lanae Billy who is putting up 13.8 per game. From there, five players average over five points per game. Junior Sydney Bevington leads the team with 8.7 rebounds per game—a mark that ranks seventh in the conference. Redshirt junior Lilly Pepper follows by averaging 6.2 rebounds per game. Billy leads the team and the conference with a 3.7 steals per game average, and junior Sadie Misner is close behind with 2.2 per game (9th in RMAC).

Fort Lewis will pick up play on Friday, January 5 with a 5:30 p.m. game against South Dakota Mines, followed by a Saturday matchup versus Black Hills State at 4:00 p.m.
